Well, if it's an S it's a new one, and you will be able to burn almost anything including Dual Layer DVDs, DVD +/- R, DVD +/- RW.

It will burn any kind of CDs as well.

The difference between + and - is I think that - is an older format, so if you want for instance to make sure that a video DVD that you are burning will play in an old DVD player, you should get a -. But I haven't researched these things so I don't know for sure.

Anyway, you can write on most of the media you will find in stores.

I have the W7S, you should be able to burn anything on the market now except HD-DVD's or Blu-Ray Discs. It has the dual layer option and light scribe as well as DVD+/-, I really dont know the difference but most dvd players in the last 2-3 years should be able to play both. I guess it depends on region/dvd player.

I remember being told to buy DVD + discs in the past.

I suppose you can windows built in burning software which is crap. I would suggest using nero or alcohol 120.
