Hello, I have recently been in the market for a portable notebook for university use. I decided on a Dell XPS M1330, but when it arrived I noticed that it emitted a high-pitched whining sound which quickly grew irritating. I have since returned it, as I intend to use the notebook in class and in the library and therefore require a quiet machine.

I have read several reviews of the W7S series, and several specifically mention the fact that they are extremely silent. I found a pretty good deal on a W7S-A1, and I was wondering if any current owners could comment on the noise (or hopefully lack thereof) made by their laptops?

    Thank you in advance.

i found it quite noisy actually... its not what you would say silent...
and cause i'm in aus it tents to get hot so the fan would come on full blast sometimes even when i'm idle / watchin divx... something thats not high cpu intensive...

You can read the W7 Owner's Lounge thread here. There may be some comments in there that will address your concerns. The chassis design has not changed throughout the model life, only the CPU pretty much, so any comments should be relevant to your inquiry.

Its pretty quite in normal use, but after an extended period of time (6 hours or so) at full power, the fans will come on, which gives off some noise, but not all that much. The DVD drive is extremely noisy though, so if you do a lot of things with CDs and DVDs, this probably isn't a machine for you.

Thanks for all the replies. I found many of the posts in the "lounge" thread to be quite informative as well.

On a side note, does anyone have experience ordering Asus notebooks from newegg.com? They are offering a free pink stuffed pig thing (FPSPT as the kids say) with the computer, and it has got to be the most random offer ever.
