Maybe a weird question, but how does the Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 PCI-E 128MB VRAM in the Asus W7j compare to a desktop AGP GeForce 6800 128MB?

I am planning to buy a w7j in the near future and just want to get a feel of
how much graphics power I will sacrifice to go portable.
I am an occasional gamer, nothing hard core (have calmed down since college).

    Regards,

    Philip

The 6800 will outperform the 7400.

the 7400go is approximately half as powerful as the 7600go which is comparable to the 6800go. in a more practical way of explaining things, you are going from playing games from mid-high settings to playing them in low-mid settings.

It's sort of hard to compare to the desktop versions, but to give you an idea where it stands 3Dmark wise...

    3Dmark05
    nVidia 7400 = 1900
    Intel GMA 950 = 450

    nVidia 7700 = 4200
    ATI x1700 = 4200

For a 13" system, it's really quite nice and since the W7 is the same physical size as the W5, same price, and yet has an inch larger screen and more than 4x the graphics power..... it's really a great system.. You just can't fairly compare it against a desktop card. In fact, it's really hard to even compare the best notebook cards against even mainstream desktop cards...

Thanks for the info. I will run 3dmark05 tonight and see how my current desktop
compares to the nVidia 7400 = 1900 (even thought they aren't really comparable).

3dMark05 free edition, default settings gave me 3003. Still ok for my old system, but the w7j with 1900 is even about 30% slower. (due to the size of course)

too bad that the w3j with x1600 has been discontinued...

It's still a good card for a tiny little notebook... but are you sure about that 3000 number in `05?

Well my desktop was built by myself a few years ago.
I have updated the graphic card three times and made a few changes now and then to other components, however the current setup is the following:

    Specs:
    AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2400+ (2 Ghz)
    AGP NVIDIA GeForce 6800 128MB
    120GB Seagate
    1 GB Kingston Value Ram

The reason why I'm currently strongly considering to buy a laptop is that there is no point anymore in updating my desktop. Of course I could take all the hardware out and keep my aluminium case and antec power supply and buy everything else new and have a top of the line desktop again like i use to have but that's not what I need or want right now. I rather purchase a fast laptop now when I 'm in college (I even checked my desktop and lcd screen in with the airplane when I flew to Europe to study. Had my harddrive as hand luggage for safety lol).

I actually also have had my eye on the A8j for a long time, since its so powerful and small in size. Strongly considering to buy that one instead of the w7j when I'm back in the states (NY). I can then use my desktop as a server or for file storage or something.

3d mark 05 score should be ok, I just installed it and ran it with everything on default (disabled antivirus etc.)

I ran 3dmark05 again and got a similar score 3001. (however was to lazy to turn all the programs currently running off)

ok, just checking.... I know the 6800 is a good card, I just didn't realize it was that good. I honestly thought they'd be a lot more similiar, but then again, isn't that old 6800 one of those double slot cards? Thing ran so hot it needed a huge cooling solution, right?

Well, mine is a single slot card from EVGA. Have not had any heating problems with it. Current gpu core temp is 58C (35C ambient) however it goes well over 60 when you play games.
There are also these massive double slot ones out there (useful if you want to overclock or they are already overclocked by the manufacturer hence need the cooling), but they just take up too much space, would personally not buy one of those.
