For all those new W7j owners out there, the first thing many of you may notice in the a little card on the keyboard explaining what this "V-Cut" is all about and sort of a disclaimer for those who think they have "light leakage". Basically, the card reads:

"This Notebook PC incorporates the new V-Cut technology, which is becoming more popular in Notebook display panels. V-Cut technology utilized prisms to decrease weight, increase brightness, and lower power consumption. Under some background settings and usage environments, the sides of the display panel will appear brighter than other areas."

What this means is not that it has light leakage or that it is ok, but rather the sides can be brighter in those same situations you may see light leakage and not to confuse the two. Although this it's focused on with this model, I can't really tell much of a difference between this and say the W3j of the W5f, although both of those screens did change a little bit with the core duo revisions.... but for a 13" display, the W7's is certainly sweet, especially for those that have seen and love the W3's display. Imagine just a 3/4" smaller, but the same resolution - so just a hair sharper.

Is it uniformly brighter at the edges, or smeary?

It's uniform if you ask me..... I measured the lids on the W5 and V6.. and the W7 is thinner than both of them...... this screen is just as nice in terms of brightness and color reproduction, as any other Asus screen and yet it's also the thinnest.

Do you know how it compares to the sony SZ premium using led backlight technology? The thickness of the lid of course...

Is it cheaper to use this v-cut. I'm just wondering how this laptop is priced so much lower then other ausu's?

I don't think it is necessarily cheaper to use new technology but to compete with the cheap macbooks...yeah...

The screen isn't "cheaper", Asus is just able to make use of use of lower costs from higher production yields, using the same screen. The screen looks better to me and any other 13" I've seen, but the sony sz and the 13" macbook are both made by asus and it's highly unlikely that they're different at all....... however Asus does use other color reproduction software that does make the screens look better (they call it - spledid), but simply put, I doubt you can find a better 13" display.

How durable is this screen and notebook going to be in general?

I think you got away with asking a general question that should have been in another thread but including "this screen" in what you asked. The screen is as durable as any other Asus or any other brand's would be..... which is not very. If you're asking how the lid strengthens it or something like that.... then I'd say it's just as good as the W5 or V6 which both have extremely thin screens, but are just as resistant to forces as any of Asus' other models. In terms of the chassis, it's hard to compare.... they're all about the same. Find one bad thing said about anything in the W series and I'd be surprised... they're all different sizes, but all about as good.
