i just found this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=69536&page=4

would i be able to replace/upgrade the Core2Duo CPU with an Atom processor?

i want to disable the fan and upgrade the drive to SSD.

i just hope the Atom CPU architecture will be compatible with the W7s mobo.

if doable, i will get it done by a technician.

Last I checked the Core 2 socket is drastically different from the Atom socket. Atom is physically much smaller than a C2D, so to put it into your computer you'll need to replace your whole motherboard (in theory, unless I'm mistaken).

In reality you're best off getting a new computer if you'd like an Atom. :/

Just get a 45nm CPU, use RMclock to underclock and undervolt.
You will be able to disable the fan.

For example, I had a T8100 that was 20C while I was just on the net, the fan was not on at all.

Now if you underclock to 600mhz and undervolt, I'm sure the max temp will not go above 50C with no fan. And still the CPU would be as powerfull (if not more powerfull) than an atom.

Atom's are Soldered onto the motherboard, there an "all-in-one" package that OEMs buy, then configure with ram, hdd, etc to sell for "low-cost" netbooks. Why you want an Atom is beyond me, most are Single core, and Generations behind compared to Core 2's.

As one member pointed out, you can unvolt/underclock the CPU to save power/heat etc, But i think it actually be better just to buy the LV or ULV (=Ultra low volts) Processors,
