Hey you all. I have been recommended buying a W7J in one of the other forums and I have been reading a few reviews. It seems like a really nice and light laptop which is what I'm looking for (school+quake 3 gaming). That's just thing that I'm not really a fan of, and that's the build-in webcam. I don't really wanna give money for something that I'm not gonna use anyways.

So my question is; Is there a laptop like the W7J but without the webcam ?

If you're not a fan of it because you won't want to pay for it... with or without it, the notebook's price would be the same. It's about a $20 part and it's considered simply an added value on the notebook. If you don't like it because the webcam area is a lighter color than the lid, you could do what I did and take the little cover off and paint it a darker color... then you don't see it as much.

... but no, there isn't a such thing as a W7 w/o a webcam... and basically ALL systems from now on that are based on newer designs will all have webcams because most people expect them now.... so you'll have to grow to accept it. ;)

Blah :p But yeah I thought that I could save some money not getting a webcam, but if it's just a $20 part then I guess I'm better off with one.

I have a few questions more now that I just have to life with the cam.
I read in a review that you could get the cam to take a picture if someone where to, say, use your pc without permission. But how does that exactly work ?

And if anyone knows, please tell me if the W7J is any Linux friendly.

Nvidia cards are usually linux friendly. W7J comes with Nvidia Go7400 (which is the same as my card), so it should not have any problem under linux.

Get a custom Dell M1210. It's that simple.

Too bad that the Dell is way too heavy and that the design is rather ugly imo.

You can still get the W7j - it's a good computer - just don't use the webcam! Think about it. Just having the webcam improves the resale value of your notebook. It may come in handy one day. If you are dead set against it, then just uninstall the driver (or disable it) to never have to worry about it again.

Well now that I can't get a version without the cam, I'm obliviously gonna use it. But you're right about the resale value, hadn't thought of that.

What about the Z35? It's similar to the W7 except it has no webcam... it's not as powerful graphically either, but it's still a good machine.

As stated above, if you simply can't have a webcam, or are afraid someone might be hacking your camera and watching you.. simply remove the drivers. Government officials can't buy a notebook with a webcam, but they've started to realize soon they won't be able to get systems they need without them... so they're starting to simply disable them and remove the drivers.
