Just wondering what the ware was like on the Asus W3v especially around the palm rest. Please indicate how long you have had the unit for as well.

    Thanks

    Darren

EDIT: Just realised that the title should be "Ware and Tare"

If you love typing alot hour a day and you use the palm rest heavily after a couple months you will see wear. You will see wear on any laptop on the palm rests. Find me one that does not. :)

.... actually the W1/W2 and V6.... the anodized brushed aluminum isn't just used there for looks (although that would be fine if that's all it was there for). My brother has used a W1n as his main computer in and out of work for two years now and the palmrest honestly looks as good as the new palmrests that we have in our spare parts bin.

Hps dont wear on the palm rest. My 2 year old dell doesnt wear on the palm rest neither do the thinkpads. And the fujistsus dont wear on the palm rest. The jusyt happened to use a pain that isnt so durable. I think they use a carbon fiber mix on the asus palm rest that material smoothes out faster than plastic.

That really depends who is using. My aging 1.5 year old carbon fiber m5n has no wear. I admit i am easy going on the palm rests. I type hell of alot though. I see hp's dells and gateways all day long. Some have no wear some have lots of wear some have some wear. We have daily carry ins for repair here. I ve seen them all except fujitsu. I have not seen a paint job that will not wear from excessive rubbing by a sweaty palm.

Thats pretty strange becuase literally out of the last 100 dells i ve seen vast majority have wear on th epalm rests except the really new ones. Again it depends on the user and his palms.

im talking about the D series dells they are much more durable. It takes like a year of use to start to wear down the palm rests. HPS have a durable black plastic that isnt painted i dont think that doesnt wear down much. Carbon fiber mix has its benifits but it really isnt as durable in the wear sence.

Check out some of the sold items. We had about 15 or so D series come in the last year as trade ins from a local realty. The owner hated them and got them all replaced with asus ensemble and some z70va's. Every single one had wear on them especially the d800. All had less then 6 months of use by corp users. The d800 series were horribly worn particularly on the palmrests. A few we had in pristince condition went up on the forums the rest we just got rid of locally to friends and walk ins. It really depends on the user. Some will find wear after a few months some never. I am not just saying this because i dont like dell (i really dont) i am sying that becuase thats what i see. its something i pay attention to.

    Link not working :p

And yea, I love the brushed aluminum keyboard area, nothing sticks to it, the wrist area has been perfect still :) The stickers also came off, without anything, no residue at all :D

It's not about smoothing out........ it's that most plastic finishes on laptops are left rough and are infused with a color..... hold up well but don't always look the best. Asus' finishes are smooth from the get go and painted in ways that can't be reproduced by simply dying the plastic. So, there's a give and take on every design of every computer....... but that's the main difference... good or bad... it's one of those subjects that you could look at from both sides and understand with ease.

    Not for me too.

BTW what is considered wear. I have seen smoothing out, which is a bit annoying but not really a big deal. My 4-5 year old sony has that, but the paint is still the same. My 1 year old Fujitsu looks brand new, it has one of those shiny finishes so it cannot smooth out and I don't think it is painted. When I took it apart all the plastic (inside and ou) was the same white color, just polished on the outside but not the inside. Although the keyboard on my Fujitsu shows clear signs of smoothing out especially the corner of the space bar where I always rest my thumb.

... shiney palmrests..... That's THE indication of wear in my opinion. Basically you can baby your computer and it could look as good as it did the day you took it out of the box... but if you use it on a regular basis, there's no good way of protecting the everyday wear and tear that typing alone does..... it'll shine up the keys and the friction and sweat of your palms acts like a polishing compound.......

Thats what i thought too, Some of the D series from dell i have seen had completely worn palmrests where the paint was gone. It all depends on the user. Give the same laptop to 10 people have them use it for 3 years. You will find some worn, some good and some perfect condition.

Yes different people wear down palm rests differently. But certain material wears much quicker and the w3v and z63 are very prone to it in the first few months wich is rather fast. Im not saying they are ****py or anything i love asus products. i was just saying regular non painted plastic lasts longer. thats all.

Just when i had decided i was going to get the W3J.....

For this reason alone i think i'll probably be better off getting the V6J, but for the same money i could get the Sony SZ!

Back to square one (VERY CONFUSED!!!)

Do not change your mind about the W3j because of the palm rests. As long as you dont have really greasy hands you will be fine. I would get the W3J over the sony any day. Sonys have ****pys build quailty. the V6J if you are going by constuction alone is hands down one of the best period in a class beyond the sony and only the W2V\J is in the same league. If the video card if fine for you get the V6J i would. next the W3J great machine. Remember if in a year the palm rest looks bad for like 40 bucks you can buy a new palm rest and install it yourself.

z63a has been around for a year now. I ve sold alot of them. So far the palm rests have not been a source of complaints other then what you find on forums. Its equivalent to the so called heat issues. Just a bunch of misguided people that really are either very picky or overlook the obvious. I cant say the palm rests on the w3 wear down any faster or slower then other notebooks. I ve not seen any evidence of it, Just becuase a few posters have this happen to them dont mean its inherent. I am pretty sure you stick any number of other laptops under their palms they will wear down the same way. I have had z70va come back after a few months with worn palm rests then again i ve had the m6n in the same shell come back after years with palm rests that barely look touched. I cant say the w3 is any less or more susceptible to wear then any other. I just dont see it. I think i would being in this biz. The same can be said for all the asus laptops.

The only reason why i may consider the Sony SZ was becuase it's got a bushed metal palm rest.

Either way i'm going to have to wait until i see a customer review of the Asus W3J, as I am still worried about heat issues.

What heat issues? There were never heat issues with the w3v. Are we still talking about the notorious scorching palm rests? If yes the new one will have it too.

Well as it's got a X1600, so i'd like someone to confirm the issue or put this issue to rest when they have one.

OOoh your talking about the x1600. Honestly. I dont see that in there. I see its planned but i just dont know how they will cramp it in there. I am with you. Anxious to see how that pans out.

Geared im in the UK and there's a few Asus resellers that are getting them in, in the next few weeks. Not sure how as they have not gone into mass production. But anyway.....they claim that it has got the X1600.

I know it's all chat at the moment, but it would be good to see Asus give us a final spec soon!!
