MY new N71JQ has been working fine so far but whenever I tilt the screen there are two major wavy points a few inches from the bottom left corner. It looks like the waviness you get when touching an LCD screen.

Here's a video, and I recommend skipping to 0:25 for a good angle of it.

Is this normal? Should I return or RMA my laptop? Will it cause any screen damage in the future?

It's hard for me to tell from your video but it may be backlight bleed. If it's bad enough to bother you all the time you should probably consider setting up an RMA and make sure you're registered at ASUS Member Login

Sorry, it was hard to get a good angle of it with the camera.

I'm not sure if it's backlight bleed because it only happens when I tilt or tap hard on the screen. It even shows up if I tap the top far corner of the screen away from it. It looks fine if I leave it alone. I think that the screen was mounted too tight on the bottom or something.

It looks like that type of wavy effect you get from swiping your finger across an LCD screen that doesn't have any major protective screen. This laptop's screen has a plastic cover across it, though.

Yeah I guess there's a chance the bezel is on there too tight or in a bad way.

There is usually tape holding it in the center-bottom, you could try realigning it if you took the bezel off. I'm not sure you'd want to do that though, they tend to be fragile.

You could try just loosening the screws a little, too.

i'd try loosening the screws but also check your LCD cable.I think that might be the issue.

Alright, I'll try. The thing is, is this a problem worth RMAing or returning the laptop for? I mean is this going to lower the longevity of the screen over time?

i do not think it qualifies for rma but the video is not exactly giving an indication of anything other then some anomaly. i can reproduce the same on many laptop by flexing the lcd. why is this a concern? how does this impede "normal" use? do you typically bend the screen back and forth while using it? the screen stays in one position. is there any sign of anomaly when the screen is not moved?

Well, I can reproduce my computer exploding in a flash of smoke and flame (okay, only once) but when it happens while moving around the screen, that's ... iffy.

I'm not saying it's wrong, and it probably doesn't impair usage. But it does look like a design defect...

that does not look like a defect at all. You can call it less then perfect or anything else like crappy design but not defective. A defect is something the hampers "normal" use. This does not. There are many things that can be classiefied as a defect. Even a missing screw can be a defect. Just because the screen could have been made more rugged / durable does not make it defective. are we looking at the same video? i see a screen that is becoming distorted due to flexin of the hinges and plastic surrounding it. I can not say this is uncommon.

I have a similar problem. It does impair the usage of the computer sometimes.

My screen sometimes starts to show stripes, flickering out of nothing, without touching the screen or rotating it. Then, if i rotate the screen a little the flickering usually goes away. Sometimes I have to close the laptop and re-open but it always goes away.

It is probably a matter of the wire connecting the screen to the computer itself, what can be done?
