I'm planning to order a G51Vx-A1 soon, and from what I see on xotic and gentech, they charge an extra $130 for each "upgrade" to a 500 GB 7200 RPM. It sounded like a lot, so I went to newegg and found this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374
It seems like they're not charging for the difference, but for the price of a whole new drive. *AND* keeping the old drives. So I was thinking of ordering with the stock HDD configuration, ordering 2 of these babies from newegg and replacing them. I can then sell the old ones, use them in enclosures, or maybe put them in my two PS3s. Heck, even if I don't, if I merely resell them it'd be a more financially sound option. What do you think?
-
If you want to do it, and its financially easier on you, then yes there is nothing against doing what you want to do to your property.
-
You see... You'd be surprised how many people would not go for the option 'B'.
Not all people want to go through such "difficult" situation. It's "us"... Who are bit beyond the mainstream population who prefer to customize their PC configuration this way and perhaps do their "math" lol...
My 2c... -
Er... It's a five minute task to get the HDDs replaced, and it doesn't void the warranty, or am I missing something?..

Five minutes if you've done it before. Like Leo said, most people are deathly afraid of even unscrewing their backpanel.
-
I'd go for the option 'B' and perhaps most of us here would do the same. Maybe not?

It takes me five minutes to dismantle my entire screen.

I just remembered something...
Try changing the ram on Vostro 1500. It's located under the keyboard. I am almost certain that 99% of the people never changed the 2nd ram stick on their Vostro 1500. -

Thank you for the links to that wonderful index, xleonid. Now I can plan out how to effectively take over the Asus forum help members in need in the Asus forum.

Huhu, yeah, that index isn't a lot of help. Anyone with first hand experience of swapping the HDDs?
-
Its not really a difficult process. The only thing really in the way is the backpanel, which is easily lifted off after taking out a few screws holding it in place. Also, the G50 disassembly guide in the link leo posted should also work for the G51, as they use the same chassis.

Well...
Open up the laptop.
Unscrew the four screws securing the bracket to the case.
Remove bracket
Unscrew the screws holding the HDD to the bracket.
Remove HDD
Replace new HDD
Screw in screws holding the HDD to the bracket.
Replace bracket
Screw in the four screws securing the bracket to the case.
Close up the laptop. -
OK, I'll do that. I'll try to get a disassembly guide from GenTech or Xotic to make sure I don't ruing things. How many screws are there in the "Open the laptop" step?

A dozen or so. Several small ones, a couple of larger ones, and one long one near the fake grill.
Like Element said, it's a very easy, logical process. -
This is of the G60, Im under the assumption it is the same layout for the G51 as well? Forge or somebody can you back this up?

The G60 is pretty much identical to the G51. The only thing that differentiates them is the display size.

What Soviet said.
That picture reminds me I have to take some measurements of my brackets.
Weird math
