Especially after reading some of these new reviews of Conroe:

Hopefully Merom will have a similar effect on the laptop processor market but have a greater availability than Conroe.

It may take a while, ASUS is never really quick to intergrate new processors

tahts gay. so another 6-8 months for merom on asus.. then in another 6-8 months they got quad cores... **** man.
-
Any chance merom equipped w3j's will be available by end of august? Wanted to buy it this week but with the performance benefit of merom, would it be worth it to wait another month or two? Really wanna replace this old Insiprion 8600 asap.
Btw, this is my first post so hello! (long time lurker) -

If ASUS follows their regular schedule, based on previous releases, I would say, around October-November?
Of course, not only does it have to be built there, shipping it here is another factor -
if you keep waiting, you'll wait forever... you'll then wait for quad cores and give up merom and such....
If you have the need (going to University in sept) then you should get it. IF you can wait because all you want is something to play on (other then deskop) then I guess you should put it on hold. -
Not only that, the W3 could be EOL. Which would be a stupid move, sine the W3 is probrably ASUS's best seller.
I work at a coffee place, and I've seen about 3 W3v's, a W5f and a A6jc(I think?). And about 100+ ThinkPads -

i hope asus can do us right and give us a merom lap with a wsxga screen

I am planning to purchase the V1J, and probably will not be going to wait till October/November. As soon as they have finally implemented Merom, there will be another announcement saying the upgraded V1Js will carry a X1800.
As mentioned before, you can choose to buy or wait for ever. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
. As coriolis noted, you're looking at sometime in mid 4th Qtr probably, at the very earliest.

Thanks for the info guys. Just bought the w3j. Should arrive thursday if it ships out today. I'd like to upgrade to a merom processor eventually. I understand this will void the warranty. If something does break and I reinstall the original cpu, is there any way asus can tell (ripped sticker) that the internals have been modified?
If I buy the extended warranty, will a cpu upgrade void that as well? -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
There has been debate on the forum about whether memory and HD upgrades impact the warranty - search for the threads for more info.
Congrats on your new machine. You won't be disappointed. -
Did anyone read the part about PECI controllers being nessasary on the mother board for Conroe computers to even boot.
Is there a PECI controller on the W3J motherboards? If not, a lot of people bought this laptop assuming they could swap out the cpu for Merom who are now outta luck.
EDIT: All signs point to no. A Google search for PECI and W3J turned up zero results. It's not conclusive, but definitely not encouraging. -

is the x1800 v1j true or something you made up?
if its true i definately will wate -

sept at the earliest for merom. Thats best case scenario
-
so best time to get duo cores would probably be mid augest...as that would probably be the cheapest.
-
You really need a 64bit OS and 64bit compatible software to get the most out of the new merom.
that will take longer than a few months, just buy the W3J now -
All we can hope for is that ASUS releases BIOS updates providing Merom support for all their Napa platform notebooks. You will be just fine using a Core Duo CPU for several months. Wait until the next price drop, then upgrade to a Merom processor. It's a great time to purchase a notebook
Well I'm officially putting my W3J purchase on hold...
