I think I'm going to replace my Z70Va. The battery is toast, fans are starting to sound more like helicopters, cdrw drive doesn't read anything, and I'm getting memory errors when I windows starts.
Instead of going through the trouble of getting all of this fixed, I think I'd rather get a nice new dual core Asus with a warranty. I'd also like the extra portability of a 14". The only thing that's been worrying me is the battery life that most seem to have. When my Z70Va was new, the battery life was around 3.5 hours with wireless on and the LCD brightness most of the way up. Are there any Asus notebooks out there now that can come close to this? The one that really sparked my interest was the F8Sv-a1 (about the the max as far as my budget), but I don't think 89 minutes of battery life is going to be enough (what I read in a translated review).
I'm looking for something on a similar performance level to this HP. I'd get the HP with an extra 12 cell, but I've loved my Asus, and wanted to make sure there wasn't something I could get at a similar price/performance level from Asus.

do asus have models with both intel and nvidia graphics that the user can select at startup?
and what 14" models are using LED backlights now? that should save some power. -
Anyway, to rush340, I am pretty sure you won't find an Asus with the type of battery life you are looking for.
In the 14" category the V2s is reported to get about 2.5 hours (based on what I've read on these forums). The F8 should be about the same or worse, as you mentioned reading less than 90 mins.
For 15.4" notebooks, the V1s might be a good option for you, but it will definitely stretch your budget. I am suggesting it because it has an 8 cell battery with an optional 6 cell modular bay battery expansion. With the modular battery, you can get about 3.5-4 hours with reasonable usage (Wifi on, ~3-4/8 brightness). This is an estimate and was inferred using the user review here. Note that total for the third "Usage Scenario" is incorrectly calculated and should read 4:15.
There may be a battery wear issue with the V1s, but it doesn't seem likely. A few people are having some issues, but nothing as serious as seen with the V6J or V1Jp.
In any case, Asus' battery life has been on the decline, and I wouldn't expect 3 hours out of any of thier notebooks using standard battery. -
asus make nice laptops but there machines with graphics power arent particularily road warriors. would be better to look at hp/dell/apple/lenovo.

None of them. All of them are between poor and pathetic, with the U1 being the only one on the OK side.
What ASUS notebooks have the best battery life?
