Hey guys, this is what I need in my Asus Laptop for college.
2 gigs ram
santa rosa 2.2
at least 120 gb hard drive
dedicated video card (doesnt have to be top of the line)
bluetooth
vista
14.1 or 15.4 inch size
UNDER 1800$
Lastly not a huge laptop, preferebly on a lighter side.
OPEN TO ALL SUGGESTIONS PLEASE HELP, I MUST ORDER FOR COLLEGE NEXT WEEK
-
Under 1800$ leaves the G1s out of it unless you can get a very good deal somewhere. However keep in mind that with the other laptops you will need to buy a bag and mouse extra and it will cost you about 100$ to get equal value to what is included with the G1s.
I voted for the A8sc. It is the smallest and lightest. Not the best graphics card I know but you can do some gaming with it. -
I got a W3J for school. A 15.4" could have been used, but I feel it would have just been a little to big to be convenient to carry when I needed to and that extra pound does make a difference when you are trying to keep your bag light.
As for needing a bag/mouse - you don't need to spend $100 on that stuff. You can get a sleeve ($20-$30) for the notebook and stick it in your backpack (I assume you already have one) and a mouse isn't that much either.
I voted for the A8 because it is the lightest of the bunch and your main goal in college is to get an education, have fun, and meet people - not sit in your room gaming all the time. You can always upgrade the RAM on your own (2GB is becoming fairly cheap on Newegg). -
Id roll with the g1s.
I dont like the other ones in your choices.
If you are of a like mind as brainonska, Id wait for the f8. That one is going to be the most like his w3j
If youre getting the a8 series get one with a powerful gpu at least. If not the hp dv 2500 is very apealing for a 8400 gpu laptop.
or asus s37, Id much rather have that its a 13.3 inch with a 8400 go.
If you have to buy an asus now, the best one is the g1s. ITs tough it has a great screen. It would be a pain to set up on the spot in the library but youd live with it. It would be harder to live with a a8 series with 8400 gpu. -
Another vote for the A8sc! It is a really nice laptop for its price! Moreover, it is easier to carry around. If you don't game seriously, take the A8.
Another choice is the V2JE if santa rosa is not a requirement. It has excellent quality. I never regret buying it. -
i voted other, i think you should wait for the F8.
-
I thought all Asus laptops came with a bag and mouse? Or are the pictures on Newegg misleading?
-
I voted other too. Get the V2je...too bad it doesn't have santa rosa.

The bag and mouse is are a joke anyway. Not worth factoring into your decision.
-
What joke?
The bag and the mouse are very good at least in EU and for the business line. I have used them ever since I got my notebooks, and the bags look as good as new (one is 2years old the other is 1year).
The mouse, the same, except the logitech logo has rubbed off and now it's shiny black all over. It's working perfectly.
-
so what the G1S-A1 be a bad choice for college? I am getting a deal for 1800 and I do not think I could pass that up

Why do they give you a freakin backpack with the G1? That's retarded. Who wants to carry their laptop like that? Why not just a normal laptop carrying case over the shoulder? Sheesh... very disappointing.

The mouses and bags that come together with an Asus laptop are good but they are not the best. I still prefer they are to be optional so Asus can reduce the price.
Anyway, I think V2JE is your best choice. Santa Rosa is not really a big improvement for your extra money. -
I agree with the F8. Otherwise, go for the S96S.
-
Well my bag, which is the most common asus bag, is related to the targus messenger.
However, the targus messenger is of higher quality. Small things like reinforcements in vinyl are better on the messenger. I have used my bag since I got it but dont get that happy about it.
The mouse is exactly like the logitech optical mouse. its worth sommething to you unless you already have a stockpile. -
Well, I do think the bags in the US are of worse quality and looks that those that come here in Europe. That would explain our difference in opinions.
Of course they are not the best -- you can go and pay 60 EUR for a mouse if you wish, and 100 for a bag; but I prefer the reasonable-quality ones coming with the laptop. No need to roam the stores for them. Of course, on the other hand, if you already do have a stockpile of them, they are of little use. I didn't have any.
Don't believe you're not paying for them, though. They are factored in the cost of the notebook, don't worry about that.
I do agree with the comment that advertising you're carrying a laptop by using an ASUS-labeled bag is not such a good idea. For myself, when traveling any longer distances than from and to work, I am using a nondescript backpack with a notebook compartment - not because of not wanting to advertise but because I usually have to carry other stuff with me besides the notebook. -

The bag is nice and the mouse is nice. Seeing as you need something to carry around your laptop, and the trackpad is only good on the road, the mouse is useful. These aren't random extras, but it would be nice if they were optional. Props for picking the leaders in the bag and mouse fields to make their extras though.
P.S. The Asus logo on the G1S bag is very subtle and impressed inward; in all likelyhood it would not be noticed by anyone passing you on the street or in the library. -
Hrm, well...backpacks (i.e. 2 strap, or with waist strap) are better for your shoulder than single-shoulder slings, as you can imagine
They also can fit the most--if you're going to college, having to worry about an extra bag in addition to your normal load of books is NOT the way to go. One backpack to take care of everything you need to carry is very useful and not a waste at all. -
I, for one, will not be a walking ASUS advertisement.

Every time you use a laptop in public you are advertising for the company who makes your laptop. So if you are worried about be a marketing pawn or whatever, then you shouldn't use notebooks at all. And if you wear adidas or nikes or whatever, a Polo shirt, or Levi's jeans, you are a walking advertisement for them, so why not add another company that you like to the lineup? If you got the non-rebranded one you would be advertising Asus and Targus at the same time.

F3SV-B1 seems good for your specs and it's cheaper than a G1S if you don't need a top end card. You have to upgrade to 2Gb because standard is 1Gb.

asus is the end of the word peg asus
Thats what it means. Now why that should mean something is the next question.
asus is a spin off of acer. It was formed by engineers from the acer desktop and motherboard division.
