I'm thinking about getting a c90 but I don't know enough to make an informed decision yet. Other than supporting mobile nividia cards I have no clue what components are compatible with the c90. Can I just grab some desktop components off Newegg/TigerDirect/Other stores and pop them in? Or does it use laptop based components? Also do the current generation of c90's except standard desktop Santa Rosa intels or is it a special chipset?

From what I've seen and read.. you can plop in any desktop Conroe (LGA775) with the exception of the Quad Cores as those aren't supported (yet?). Other than that, I believe all the other components must be for laptops. SO-DIMMS, 2.5 inch harddrive, etc... Also, there is no Santa Rosa desktop. Santa Rosa is the name for the mobile chipset.

End of the summer if I'm not mistaken but we don't have any guarantee that it will be able to be put on a MXMII module. We are all just hoping.

Ah I see, I take it notebook optical drives are also something that you can't just get off new egg. Hopefully if whitebooks catch on more notebooks components will be available through the consumer market.

actually, you may be able to use a drive from newegg.....but the front bezel might not fit properly, and you need to make sure you get the special optical drive brackets.

Hopefully it does not use drive brackets like other ones. Usually they have a slot for the dvd drive so you just pop it in. Newegg drives will work just get a slim DVD drive and you're good to go. But please make sure the drive bay does not use a bracket. If it uses the bracket, the seller must provide for you. Usually DVD drive will be include nowadays , like my Z84j.

The Quad cores may work. It would be quite interesting if they did.....hehehe, no need for a desktop at all. Heat would be unbearable tho.

As far as I know the quad core runs off the same bios and chipset as the dual core... so even tho they say it cant support it due to heat issues... I belive it will work just fine. If not some 3rd party bios will surly come about to make it work.

They said they have plans to somehow fit a quad core in the C90/C91 at some point down the road.

I was able to find everything on newegg.com for the C90 Except the optical drive, but it comes with a dual layer dvd rw... not sure what you would want thats better except a hd-dvd or bluray drive.

The prices were anywhere from 10-20$ cheaper on the egg, than getting it from the same place as the barebone system, but they also do install for free. So if your not a computer savy person, you may opt to pay the 40-70$ more for the parts and have it installed for you.

I personally would rather do it myself, id have ot look into the shiping cost for parts from the egg to determin if its really much cheaper in the long run or not.

All I really need now is some reviews on this thing about the heat/noise and how it feels vs say a G1S-A1. If its on par, this is definitly the way to go as its about 500$ cheaper to build one than to get a G1S.

Im ording the barebone with CPU and wireless card only because u can install other components urself without void the dealer warranty. Ram and HD are really easy to install, even a caveman can do it.

Any Kentsfield will not work in the C90 because of the power draw. A Conroe uses 65W, but a Kentsfield uses twice that (130W). The C90 maxes out with the X6800, which draws approximately 68W. Newer Penryn processors might work, but will need a BIOS patch (assuming they don't uses more power than ~70W).

Since the new cpus are going to be on the 45nm side of things they should use up less power and produce less heat so thats a good thing for a notebook.

As for the wattage rattings. I think thats the heat wattage not the actual power draw.

penyrn must have worked with the c90 since it drains less power and performed better that conroes
at least if intel still have it supported for 775 sockets,or this c90 will stuck in ice age in 2-3 years in the future

well. You can still upgrade the GFX card. The gaming performance wont suffer... as much if u have a decent GFX card. I recently got a 8800GTS and a new PSU on my P4 rig. :D So i basically turn the granddaddy into a power house with a GFX card upgrade.
