Please list all the items I will need to install the 2nd hard drive in the G50V. I realize I need the drive but what about the carrier and cables? Are they in the bay already or do I need to get them from somewhere? If I need to order them, where can I do that?

    Thanks!

Depending on the model, the G50 may already have 2 drives installed (G50v-a1 or a2 etc)

They're just regular laptop sata drives. If you want to upgrade the internal harddrives, you need to look for: 2.5" laptop sata Hard drives.
If you are interested in setting them up as a "RAID", then you should try and buy the same drives.

Yes, I realize that some already have the drives and I do understand which ones will fit and work...but notebooks require a tray or carrier for the drive to fit correctly in the provided chassis location. I doubt that this tray is provided in the models that come with only one hard drive installed. I also wonder if their is a cable needed. This is the information I'm looking for.

    Thanks.

check your laptop to see if a metal tray is already fitted. I would have thought it would have been. If its missing (on the G71v) the trays are identical so you just need a spare from Asus.

As for cables etc, none are needed. The hole in the laptop has the connectors built in and the drive just slides into it. Then you need to configure it how you wish to use it (if you decide RAID0 then you will loose any data on the main drive when setting it up).

If you dont have the metal tray wrap the hdd in vinyl cover if it is close to any of the circuits on the motherboard. Make sure to leave the top side of the drive uncovered. You can jerry rig it so that it works. you can use soft props or some kind of cushioning to keep it tight in the compartment.

I think the tray is also available on the ASUS eStore. Someone mentioned yesterday that it was currently out of stock, though.

The main reason for this is to leave the breather hole accessible. It's important to follow this requirement.

I would have though using some small foam blocks would help to keep the drive away from surfaces.

The bay on my G71V can take 12.5mm high drives (which was a shock when I found out, hmmm maybe a raptor after all but thats another subject). Putting 2 small strips of foam under the drive and at the end to stop it sliding out would work in the short term but it would not be good to keep it with this setup.
