I know that the speakers are rather horrid on this otherwise pretty amazing machine, what else is bad on it? Battery life? Anything else?
-
The speakers have been judged too harshly because they are being compared with the reviewers' idea of a stereo speaker.
The speakers are much better than those on my old Dell D600. They are not music speakers because the reponse range seems a little clipped.
The speakers are decent for speech and MIDI sounds but you are going to want to plug in external speakers to listen to CDs. -
Been hearing of grainy screens on the G1S (screendoor effect?)
-
size/weight and battery life are ones i have heard about.

Well, there are a few factors, but I'll counter balance it out, just a bit.
Size: The G1s is quite chunky, coming in at 1.4 inches thick and a bit on the larger side. However, we haven't heard much about it being loud or hot, so that balances it out a bit.
Screen: Debatable, the screen is a beautiful 1680x1400 glossy display but there seems to be a grainy effect on it, especially on a light background. Though there are no current fixes, only time will tell if a BIOs update will.
Battery life: I can't really say much, ASUS have been quite disappointing in the battery life area, not much to say but ASUS needs to choose a better battery manufacturer cause the ones they use now aren't really that good. Besides the speedy CPU and the 8600GT, those factors may play a role, just a bit
Speakers: Tinny, small, it's pretty mediocre. But who uses notebook built in speakers, honestly -
The g1s has one of the loudest fans I believe. Reaching up to approx. 50dB.

On stock 'battery saving' mode, I get 2:40 on battery, with brightness one up from lowest (plenty bright for me). Not stellar, but considering how much power there is, it isn't terrible (the location of the battery unfortunately doesn't allow for an extended version).
I haven't noticed any grainy screen, though. Might be a fairly isolated occurance, blown up because you're more likely to hear vocal complaints than praise.
Size hasn't really been an issue, it fits in both North Face backpacks I've tried (Heckler, and Optimus).
Speakers are rather blah, but that really shouldn't shock anyone, nor should it deter from the overall system. Good speakers on a notebook are a rarity, indeed.
It does get very hot when on high performance, and playing games, but that could also be because its 100*+ outside... with no air conditioning, it is likely not helping. On battery, in saver mode, I've only felt the bottom was hot when I was watching a movie in bed... pillowtop mattress makes for a nice little oven of a G1S -
i say heat too if u game too much like i do u need a laptop cooler if you dont use it ull see a performance drop. Although it doesnt overheat it gets hot but the good part is the top of notebook and the handrest section stays cool. Idk i can see frame rates drop when i dont use lap cooler.
What does the G1S really fall short on?
