    do you have to get the whole motherboard and video card replaced if its not under warranty, since i heard that the video card was soddered on to the motherboard?

    depends what model you have. some models have separate video cards.

    All Asus notebooks with 9800M GPUs are not soldered.
    Artifacts are usually caused by an unstable GPU (either a failing GPU, being overclocked too hard etc...). If it's out of warranty and artifacts are not caused by overclocking, Asus would most likely replace the GPU, but you'll have to pay for the replacement.
