Greetings - I ordered an Eee PC 1000H from NewEgg last week - and paid $479 for it. Yesterday I saw that they have a different model - the EPC1000HA - for $429. From what I can see - the spec's appear to be the same as the 1000H. Both have XP Home, 1-Gb of RAM and a 160-Gb HDD. Has anyone heard anything about this (what seems like the 50th!) new model?

The one you ordered was probably one of the Fine Ebony or Black versions, the new one you mention is pearl white. Sounds like same specs otherwise (former is off NewEgg's page now), but unique model numbers solely because of that.

Every Asus model gets a specific number depending on it's particular config - so not a new model or anything, just variations on the 10" eee theme.

Civic is correct. They also do come with 160GB hard drives as a standard I believe. There are mini bluetooh usb devices that are extremely streamlined and intel wireless n cards cheap, so anyone with/ordering an HA can always make the changes and still be about the price of the H.

Good info - Thanks to all. I did not notice the wireless spec change when I compared the spec's on NewEgg. I haven't used Bluetooth on any of my lappies so the absence of BT wouldn't have hurt me and $50 is $50!!

I thought the HA droped the bluetooth, downgraded the cpu, and downgraded the wireless. Thats what they said before release guess it was changed.

Bluetooth is mandatory for me and installing it I do believe will void the warranty as I think its behind a seal, the wireless card tho is easy enough to change out and I personally dont have or use N standard anyways. I'll have to check witch it was behind the seal, you can get to one card right when you open it with no seals its the wireless or the bluetooth and I do not remember witch it was, the other tho I am pretty sure is on the other side of the board and you have to break a seal to get to it.

The CPU is the big deal, the atom is one of the key parts that make the eee have a very long battery life, the HA was announced to have something else.

Maybe newegg got a special model like usual... I wanted white over black actually but got the 80gb black version after the big price cut just before they were phased out.

Since then upgraded the HDD to a 250gb, the ram to 2gb, got a few accessories for it (2 cases, a gps receiver, a mouse) and the next thing on the list is maybe put a intel wifilink 5300 in there for the heck of it.

So, good deal if you ask me as long as you do not want bluetooth.

Vicious - Thanks for the info - I have been thinking about upgrading mine to 2-Gb - once it gets here. It takes 10-12 days to get stuff from NewEgg to Heidelberg. How is your battery life by the way? Seems like some people are getting around five hours - others have reported the advertised near seven...

Do what ever like listen to music while web surfing and everything on and you can get 4-5 hours easy.

Turn off wifi, camera, bluetooth, toss it on power save mode, and lower screen brightness and you cant get 7 or maybe a bit more hours out of it.

    Powersave 1.2ghz
    Performance 1.6ghz
    Super Performance 1.7ghz

Thats the only difference, not like other notebooks where it changes the brightness and stuff for you.

One strange thing to note is the higher your performance mode the lower your HDD speed, has something to do with the FSB of the system, if you overclock it with a program like EEEctl, or SetFSB it can go about 2ghz and the HDD will continue to get slower. Powersave mode seems to be all the power you need to do normal stuff, id only toss it on the fastest mode for something like playing video or a harder to run emulator like playstation.

Screen is very bright, I have mine on half brightness all the time and I dont even know it unless I check, its very usable under 0 brightness even.

Scary thought for you, Vista works on here, only thing not working is the function keys for things like volume change. It runs well and the reason I mention it is for battery life. Battery life is BETTER in Vista, people pushing past 8 hours.

Id stick with XP tho, most especially with only 1gb of ram, you NEED 2gb to run Vista well.

There was a 2gb ram on sale at frys for $13 w/ free ship, many people took advantage of that. I happend to just have a 2gb so-dimm at home already from a past notebook.

The 80gb HDD in the original sucked, it was only a 4200rpm drive and caused stutter and things when page file had to happen, the 160gb drive has remedied that its faster and larger. I have upgraded to the Seagate Momentus 5400.4 5400rpm drive it does great and has a high shock tolerance, important since I use it in my car.

One day tho I would love to have the new 500gb WD Blue :p

There are after market batteries too... stock is a 6600MaH 6 Cell

I have seen as large as a 11200MaH battery out now... that would give you... 13 hours of life or more. Very expensive battery tho. Id just get a 2nd 6 cell and a charger if I needed more battery life.

The long life and big battery is a big ++++ for the EEE as the s10, wind both come with 3 cell, and I think even the dell mini 9 is 3 cell.

If you like information as usual I am full of it :p

I have a few threads on the EEE that I will share
    Wiimote & Bluesoleil - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=303559
    Nice Leather Case I love - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=307326

I will start a thread about good tweaks here soon, like plug ins for your browser, upgrading the touchpad for new gestures ect. I have some of that posted already thru out other thread but will bring it together in one place.

Also here is a nice chart - http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparison/eeepc_comparison.htm
It was the 1000HD that downgrades the CPU to a cerleron M not the 1000HA. Lots of models out now lol.

Mailroom? sounds like the military. I used to work in the mail room for awhile when I was broken and could not do my normal marine stuff.

Yes - I'm retired Army and working in Germany as a contractor. I've been dealing with mailrooms for over 33 years .... :( Had a Dell "lost" here in 2003 after I ordered it from the PX on-line - it took me over two months to get a refund from the them. Jobs are hard to get nowadays - so I'll be staying here as long as I can - poor mail service or not.
