I didn't notice this before, but when I went to install a new hard disk in to the replacement G51 I received, I noticed a black piece of plastic (looked like the innards of an old floppy disk) covering the air intake. Considering that the air intake leads directly to the fan, isn't that a problem?

Wow, lots of typos in the topic title <_<

That plastic covering the circular intake is to direct air flow from other intakes. If removed, air flow will be limited to only that particular area of the laptop and decreases the overall cooling efficiency for other areas.

It's technically not even an intake. Maybe before it was, but not now. It's only a decoration; if you take off the plastic thing, you'll see it's solid plastic there.

Exactly...I actually drilled the a hole there in my old G50 and saw a significant decrease in temps in the cpu and gpu..The hdd did go up a good 5C though, The cooling only connects to the cpu and gpu so nothing was pulling away heat from the hdd/ram modules.
