I just fell on a topic talking about how our 8600m GT GPUs had a chance of being faulty. My laptop runs about 83-89* C whether I'm on max performance or not. I don't know if that qualifies as a faulty GPU or not, since I'm reading about people idling theirs around 67 and one case of 55 with undervolting. I bought my G1s OB from newegg in January 08.

If my laptop is faulty, what do I need to do to send it in? I doubt I'm under warranty, since I bought OB and it's been a while since my purchase.

    Any help would be appreciated.

If you're still under warranty, you should just call up Asus. Also, when was the last time you cleaned the fan and vents?

However, if there's no warranty, besides cleaning the fan and vents, you may want to replace the thermal paste on the GPU. Should help quite a bit.

I cleaned it when i added a stick of ram about 2 months ago. I'm not sure how to verifity if I'm still under warranty, if I ever was. I guess replacing my paste wouldnt be an issue if there was no warranty to void

I'm not sure how Asus warranty works though. Have you registered your laptop with Asus?

Asus may not require a warranty for the RMA. In my conversations with an admin at the US service center, he hinted at allowing such RMA's. Call and find out before you replace your paste which will void any chance of warranty replacement.

well where you plug in the AC cord, underneath are two screws. I have a bluetooth module sticker on the panel
I popped it off and removed the silver thermal tape, and cleaned out the random bits of dust that i saw. Nothing too technical.

is that both for the processor and GPU fan? I think that's for the graphics card fan right

they use the same fan, from what i've researched. If you clean it you should see a drop in both temperatures

dont bother messing with it, you'll only gain a non valid warranty

start sending it for warranty ASAP. they'll eventually replace the motherboard with the one from the G1Sn that has the problem free (fingers crossed) 9500m GS. i "think" i got mine the 3rd time around.

trust me on this one. the 8600m is a ticking bomb.

call anyway. they'll ask you for the serial number. when you give it to them and they tell you its out of warranty, they can oftentimes be haggled to cover widespread problems even tho its out of warranty.

make sure they understand that you're fully aware of the recent 8600m probelms

just called them right now. they said they wud have a look at it with no charge.but if there was a problem they would have to charge me for out of warranty service. i did mention about the 8600 problem and they rep said it woudnt make a diffrence coz nvdia didnt ask for any recalls. they sent me an email add with rma number. what do u guys think? most likely i think il get charged.
