    What's a good G51vx/G51J notebook cooler?

I'm looking at either the Zalman ZM NC-2000 or the Cryo S. The NC-2000 looks like it can cover more of the vents if you position the G51vx lower. The Cryo S looks like it covers only the CPU/GPU area as the fans are higher up, although this is the most important part that needs cooling so this could be a plus? One thing I don't like about the Cryo S is that there's no power button and the speed dial is on the back whereas the NC-2000 has it on the side, plus it has a power button.

    What do people use?

I have a G51J and I use the Zalman NC2000. Quite impressed with it. Max temps I see in WoW are in the lower to mid 70's. Without...lower to mid 80's. So I'm seeing a good 10C drop by using the cooler.

Just snagged a Zalman NC2000, and it's a really nice cooler as others have mentioned. Great quality, and the perfect size for the G51. Not sure exactly how much it will lower temps, but in a Dirt 2 gaming session with the GPU overclocked, I maxed at 89C, where as before I was hitting mid 90's, and a 3DMark06 run at 550/950/1375 maxed at 90C, where as before I was hitting 95C in a test. So, seems to help, which is great. Furmark is about the same, I'm maxing at 100C in the BurnTest no AA, which has always been my hottest test, which is right around the 101C I was hitting without.

Really nice cooler, fits the G51 really well, looks nice, and is quiet even on high. Gets my vote.

I'd have to say the Zalman. I think it covers the vent areas better. The usb power fits perfectly on the back of my g51vx and the power/speed dial is easy to get to on the right hand side. I would suspect the Cryo S is more powerful judging by the pics but I still think the Zalmans air flow is better placed for the g51s vents.

This is almost off topic but yesterday I picked up a totally passive laptop cooler/stand made by Allsop (Amazon has it here http://www.amazon.com/Allsop-29591-...UTF8&s=office-products&qid=1261103048&sr=8-2). I was surprised at how effective it was; when playing WoW my laptop's fan went from "full" to "medium". It may be just angling the notebook helps, or maybe Allsop's "microchannel" design actually works, but for a really simple cheap solution to keeping the heat down it does appear to be moderately effective. It's a little small for the G51, tho, so it can be a bit tippy.

So any alternatives, preferably under the $30 range?

A Cooler Master Notepal U2 would be my third choice after the NC2000 and Cryo LX/S. The Notepal U2 gives you the ability to place the fans wherever you want them and also doubles as a very effective passive cooler if you do not need the fans. That along with portability and a <$30 price tag makes it an ideal alternative over the prior two coolers if you want a versatile, yet still effective cooler.

I think I found my cooler. With the ability to protect your laptop while in storage, position fans where you want to, and costs under $30 I don't think the U2 can be topped.

Yes, the Notepal U2 cannot be topped in terms of price, but I still went with my Xpad for pure portability. The U2 would elevate my notebook by another 5.8cm at it's highest point, which I do not want. The Xpad, however, keeps an extremely slim profile and only raises my notebook by 1.3cm.

The U2 look a bit small though. It's smaller than the Zalman NC-1000. Would the G51 even fit?

    I'm a happy Xpad user.

I only use it when I'm away from home, though, and don't have the luxury of hauling my monstrous Zalman anywhere.

What to people thing of the Notepal X2?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=396173

Looks pretty good and it's about half the price of the Zalman NC2000. Not sure how it'd compare performance wise though. I have an NC1000 but it's too small..

Or the NC1500? That's also like half the price of the NC2000.

I would think the Notepal X2 would work more efficiently than the NC1500. Given that the intakes on the G51 series are centered in the middle of the laptop and along the front of the unit, the Notepal X2 cooler has a single fan also centered in the middle. The NC1500 although has 2 fans, they are skewed towards the left.

I use the nc1000 and it cools my g51 perfect. Yes the sides go off a little bit but not a big deal.

The Massive23 is also a very good cooler for the money. It is one of the top tier coolers along with the NC2000 and Cryo LX.

the Massive23 pushes a weak 57cfm. The best bet is always a custom build =]

Hmm the Massive23 doesn't look bad. However I'm not going to be getting it for $10, being in Australia. Cheapest I have found it is for $70 which is the same as the Zalman NC2000. Which would be better?

The Massive23 is perhaps the best complete cooler to mod. Just rip off the existing USB controller and splice the fan leads to an external PSU.

Just got my NC2000, it works great, and I like it more as a laptop stand than a cooler, lol.
