    Hey guys

Something really weird is going on......recently after burning dvd files onto a dvd using my dvd writer and Nero burning programme, the dvb doesn't read when i insert it into my dvd drive!

The burn process says "burning was successful at xx/sec" but when i try to play the dvd nothing happens.

I put the dvd into the laptops dvd drive, it spins and makes that reading sound, then it just dies...nothing happens!

The strange thing is when i put the dvd into my girlfriends laptop (Dell Latitude D600) the dvd runs fine...the dvd files play perfectly.......What the heck is wrong?!

This has happened 2 times now! and i have no idea what's wrong or what i did.........can't be my dvd-rom laser can it?

Please help.......oh i can run normal dvd movies fine (i just played Mr. & Mrs Smith and it runs fine without incident)

man, i was gonna say it was the dvd-rom laser until you said you can play store bought dvd's... next question is, can your laptop play dvds burned on a different laptop? im really not sure what to say, this is kinda wierd.

I remember something along this case a while back where people burnt their own media and it won't read.

Try 3 of these quick methods:

    1) Place the media into the rom, restart the laptop, then check if the rom is reading it.

    2) Place the media into the rom, check if it read in My Computer, right click and refresh. Take out Media from the Rom and then restart the laptop, and then put in the media once more.

    3) Try your newly burnt media in a desktop and or another laptop to see if it works. (I know you said your girlfriends laptop worked perfectly, but try others aswell)

    Let us know what happens.

Is it just the media that you are burning now that doesn't work? Is there some media that you burned in the past that you used to be able to read, but can't now? Is it just new media that you aren't able to read.

I do know that there are some settings that you can set when burning CDs or DVDs that can cause read problems in some drives, but that is usually older drives.

So long as you can read store-bought DVDs, it isn't the drive. You may want to ask this question in a more technically-oriented forum, and not one that is more consumer-level. For example, go to anandtech.

    Just a thought...
