I am looking at two laptops but other than the look and some very minor details they are basically the same spec. Or am I missing something obvious?

The two laptops are the F3Sv and the G1S. Other than the CPU being 2.2Ghz in the G1S the specs appears identical on asuslaptop.co.uk. Most importantly is that the graphics cards are the same or are they? Could someone who knows more clear up what the differences are?

The links I am look at are -

    Cheers,

The biggest difference is the Video card. 8600GS vs 8600GT.
That means a difference of 2700 in 3dmark 06 to 3800 with GT.

G1S is faster in gaming. Hence the price difference as well. If you game. Go with G1S as you can get it for 1800 dollars where as the other will cost you 1520-1600 bucks but you lose a lot of performance in games.

For comparison. The previous F3S used to Geforce 7700 and the new 8600GS provide about the same result in 3Dmark 06 and in some test 7700 beats 8600GS.
The old G1 also had Geforce 7700 however the new G1S has 8600GT which has slower core and memory compared to 8600GS but higher amounts of steam processors. Double the number to be exact. Hence the performance is much higher. If you overclock you can easily leave a mobile 7900GS behind with 8600GT

the graphics are different. 8600Gt vs 8600GS. gt scores about 35% more.

One major difference is that the F3Sv has a Geforce 8600M GS and the G1S has a GT (which is substancially faster). But it has fingerprinting support which the G1S doesn't include.

You also get flashy lights on the G1S which speeds up the computer like stickers on a Civic ;)

They do not use the same graphics cards. The website doesn't make this totally clear. The G1S uses an 8600M GT, whereas the F3Sv uses an 8600M GS. The 8600M GT is a much more capable gaming card, but the notebook also costs alot more. The 8600M GS can still game well, and considering the price difference, you will have to make a decision, if you want that extra gaming performance or to save a fair bit of money.

I don't game on my PC except for a couple of older games (Warcraft 3, Quake 3, etc). I might pick up WoW again in the future, would the F3Sv handle that ok?

The G1S is tempting but it is a lot more expensive for a small bumb in CPu and a better (albeit a lot better) gpu.

The 8600M GS is still a good gaming graphics card and can handle all new games at resonable levels of detail, and since you don't game a massive amount, the F3Sv will probably be the better choice. Its got a good specification and is priced quite well, given that the G1S, which is a slightly better gaming notebook, is price so much more.

BTW I have posted a few times over the past few months about different laptops but still not bought one yet. Obviously it isn't the highest priority for me. Mainly I was waiting for Vista to come out and then for Santa Rosa. I don't really want to wait any longer, I would like to buy one before the end of June in all honesty.

I mainly want the machine as a mobile development system (C/C++/C#) on Windows (XP/Vista) and Linux (Debian/RHEL). I also use VMware Workstation a lot so I want a powerful machine (2Ghz+ (T7300 or above) due to the 4MB L2 Cache). I would also fit a 7200RPM HDD for speed.
