Hi all--I'll try to be concise:
I got an Asus G50vt back in mid-late 2008 for sub-$1000, and it's worked great for me up until now. Recently it's had issues with slowdown when I do modelling, music production, and gaming. It's also scaring me with a screen issue that I think might have to do with its connection. It sometimes just turns bright white, and I have to close and re-open it (or just tilt it back and forth a lot) repeatedly to get it to work correctly again.
I am going to leave in August to be in France for the next year, where I will presumably not be able to find a good replacement for this laptop for a decent price. Would you recommend upgrading now? If so, should I stick with Asus G-Series laptops, or is there a better value competitor now?

It's never a good time to upgrade.

Agreed, DCx..
Kruai Tough Question maybe better answered in another area of the forum. just in case you deceide to go with Alienware look at this poll about its 'flagship' computer...
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...u-receive-your-machine-ordered-expected.htmlII used to recommend ASUS w/o hesitation, now unless U R tech savy, and have good skills AFA disassembly, and don't have to have cutting edge performance, ASUS is an option I guess. -
Always wait until you absolutely need the laptop. There is always something better and lighter around the corner, and even if not, the current model would take a price drop anyway.

There is *ALWAYS* something better coming shortly, as viperabyss says. So buy what you need, when you need it.
Set a budget (or performance target) and get the best laptop you can for the money. Usually, this is an asus - but sometimes acer will pull a fast one and put something good out (the timeline series -
I would disagree with the Timeline series, and now that I'm participating in the next Timeline series project, I can't say I have much enthusiasm about it either.
When should I upgrade?
