Being a college student looking for a quality laptop I found Asus to be a perfect match for my needs. Good build quality and a powerful GPU's for gaming. I wanted something that would last for a few years because buying something and watching it fall apart a few months later is something I can't afford. I've been looking to spend about 1500 dollars on a laptop for about the past six months. I am being torn between buying a slightly outdated w3j, having superb build quality and knowing it will last. Or going with the a8js with better specs and vista pre-installed. What is challenging knowing that I could have paid the same amount for something that would look and last much better. I need the laptop now, but santa rosa is only a few months away. Should I wait or should I buy.

The important question to ask yourself is when do you need the notebook? If you can wait until summer, it may be worth it to you to do so. If you cannot, the deals on W3J's right now are really tempting in my opinion.
But the price of the A8Jp on newegg are equally tempting. Personally I'd probably opt for the higher quality. But that's a decision you need to make on your own. -
Well just to let you know, I was in this position six months ago, bought my S96J, and couldn't be happier with how it handles everything I throw at it with almost no complaints.
I believe the Santa Rosa platform will offer a decent performance increase from the current generation of Core2's, I do not know the pricing scheme though, and it's really up to you to decide as chrisyano said. -

It also depends on your needs? Will you be using it for school, work, home?
Do you mind getting a 15.4" notebook like the S96j or Z96j?
How much battery life do you need or want? The W3J has a multi-bay in which you can swap out the optical drive for the modular bay battery.
The A8js does have nice performance, the Go 7700 and a T7200, so you will be doing quite well with these specs.
The W3J cpu and X1600 are not slugs at all but many would prefer Nvidia.
Should I wait or should I buy? This question plagues all laptop buyers, the general rule is to wait as long as possible until you really need to get one.
If you think that you can spend the next 3-4 months without a notebook, possibly save up more money to get something more, then by all means. Even at 1500-1600$ you can still get a nice laptop. -
just buy the ****... you aint gon be able to wait six months

If you need Vista today, buy the A8js. If you have patience to wait until, like who knows, for Asus to release Vista drivers for W3j, then get W3j. Though, W3J has lesser light leakage and lesser reflective screen than A8js.

if you can wait till the Santa Rosa "Centrino Pro" platform, then delay your purchase by a few more months. Or you can buy the current Centrino Duo platfirm. The factor lies with wether u want it now or later.

Oh ya if you can wait Id go one size smaller to the z37
It looks something like the w7j but its got the nvidia 8400. The nvidia 8400 should be real competive with what we have in our a8js right now
I dont think the a8j with santa rosa is going to have the 8600, this is because the 8600 is a lot like what we call the 7900 now.
Im thinking its possible the next a8j isnt as high performance as this one was. -
Where do you see the specs for the z37? I remember seeing stuff about it on anandtech and engadget, but those pages + pictures seem to have mysteriousy dissapeared.

You can always play the waiting game, but I guarantee you that once Santa Rosa is launched, Intel will announce the next big thing. More than likely it will be mobile quad-cores, and then you'll want to wait for that.
Best thing to do is buy it when you cannot afford to wait any longer. -
It had 2 gb ram it had the t7600 and 8400
it also had esata
