Ok looks are good on the W2J but the specs are a joke nowadays. Is it worth to put so much cash on a system with a video card that is far behind the leaders and a screen that could be usefull on a 14inch.
Why can't they bring out something closer to this new 17incher from Sager. (or should I say Clevo) Its too bad as I like the looks of some of the ASUS but I hardly get excited over a x1600 with so many more superior cards that are out in notebooks.

Clevo's laptops are generally thicker, thus able to deal with the extra heat and cooling that are associated with high end video cards. Their new models.. while being thin in the front.. are quite thick in the back. -
Goren, i alwaise like to look at your signature to look at awsome laptops.. I remember you used to have a 15.4 Gorens top pick... You should write down a 15.4 and 17 inch gorens top pick (maybe 12'' too).

Not everyone needs a 7900 card in there pc. I wouldnt even want it. i would take a w2 above any of those others any day. you arent paying just for its specs your paying for its construction. and HDMI port. its a media center pc not a gaming rig.
-
I owned a Sager 5720 before my Asus. It was not well-built and was one loud POS. I doubt there's much difference between the 5720 and 5760 in design. -
Asus >>>>>>>>
.......
Of course, my pre-order hasn't arrived yet. So my mind can easily be changed. -
Well and i think any company could just slap a p4 chip, a 7950 card and 4gigs of ram in a laptop, but it kinda defeats the purpose of portability when you get 30 seconds of battery life, save $1000 and build a decent gaming desktop and a ultrapotable lappy.
-
Hush now... don't feed the troll.
-
But Goren has a good point, I have a W3J & my friend at work has a Mac book with the same Processor and ATI X1600 GPU, it is nice it is very thin makes my W3J look fat, but my god talk about heat, the mac could cook your dinner after a day of light use it is very hot, the palm rest is very hot and the underneath is absoutely sizzling! no visable inlet and outlet, i think it relies of passive cooling by using the chassis to disperse heat.
My mate said you should see it when you really start doing intense work...... -
hmm, actually i would prefer they stuck in a x1900 in the w2j. (coz of the softshadows?)
-
it would dumb for asus to stick the fastest cpu in any notebook. You do realize that can add like 300 or more to the price. the thing cost enough. and the cpu doesnt make much difference 5-7 percent faster maybe.
-
Well for wat asus is charging for the w2jC, a whoppin 600usd (it's 2200euros here, dunno if it is 600usd or not), stickin in the x1900 would be no problem and the price SHOULD NOT rise.
-
ASUS is charging about $2,398.99 USD for the W2Jb which is about 1,880.12 EUR; I can't see how 'sticking in' a X1900 will not make the price rise
Please get your facts right -
But a WSXGA+ screen for 600usd, that's a total ripoff.
-
well the wsxga screen would have only cost us 100 more in the US if it had came. I have owned w2v and while all you complain about the price i have handled every brand known to man. and let me tell you the w2v was light years ahead in construction it was the most beautiful laptop i have ever used period. Even better than any mac. its a awsome machine. it really is worth the price. and putting in a x1900 would make it way more expensive.
-
Well, i hope the price wont increase but i would choose no other than the w2j if it had the x1900. It looks way way better than the xps m1710.

Would you take a 17" under 7lb with a mid range video card thats 1" thick or would you take a 17" that has a monster vga card 2" thick and is 10lb or more and more expensive? Fact is most clevo laptops are huge. Its kind of like comparing a FARARRI to a 1969 GTO for example. Ye sure both may be equally fast and equally expensive but there is a difference. Some people will take the gto but i think most will take a ferari due to its size weight and most importantly looks. Gas consumption may be an issue

Not everyone is a gamer, infact a huge proportion of people who buy laptops are not gamers, and for those people price is a huge huge factor. The W2 series is designed for multimedia....just like the HP dv series, and Toshi quasimo....both of these also have 'weak' gpus, yet your not yanking there chain....why???? Is ASUS the only one worth dissing???
The x1600 is perfectly suited for what the W2 is trying to achieve ie watching a DVD not 10min of one!
If you want to game by a dell or sager etc.
If you want a personal entertainment notebook thats is extreamly well built and super light for its class, but dont want a macbook, your only choice is a W2.

A 265mb x1600 is mid range? Now, I know that the *****ing comes from the fact that it was also squeezed into the W3j, but not 4 months ago when the we were confirming that the W2j would have a 256mb x1600 everyone was thrilled that they could fit it in there....... We're not talking about like a year ago.... this is back before production started.... Even though the W2 is a 17" notebook, it's not THAT different from the 14" W3.... Yes, it has a 3" bigger screen, but all that does is give Asus more square inches to fit things....... considering the W2 has more in it, including room for a tv tuner card, a subwoofer, a mass of a/v plugs....... add on to that they larger area they have to cool what's already there. Asus was able to give proper cooling for this unit under more conditions than the W3 is really set up for..... larger cpu and just cooler all around over continued use. However, there isn't much more to the thickness, in fact, the W2 is close to the W3's thickness...... Asus is pushing it already, but they'd need more height to run bigger cards....... that would been a thicker and heavier notebook...... and then what would Asus have to say about the W2? The thinness and lightness of the W2, along with it's battery life, performance and design are what makes it different. If Asus wanted to be just like everyone else - they wouldn't sell their own notebooks......
