I think I am going to go the barebones route. It seems this is the cheapest way to things, right? Order barebones and then newegg/pricewatch/ebay the rest.

With that said, where is a good place to find this notebook in barebones fashion? Perhaps a place that even sells CPU's at a competitive price.

    Thanks

but I think it's hard to beat the price from ProPortable or Agear etc ... since they buy the parts w/ wholesale prices ... plus, you only get 1 year warranty for the whitebook ...
If I were you, I'd go for them ... since the risk is too much compared to $$$ I could save ...

You know, if you want to build it yourself, I personally can't blame you. In the end it may be a little more rewarding, but do it because you want to learn how to do it and feel like you've accomplished something.... don't do it to save a money because that probably won't happen and the also don't have a warranty.

However, even I wouldn't say the *risks* are too high.

I do find it more rewarding to do it myself. I started pricing them out, and it seems that I can save around $200 by purchasing the parts I want and dont want via newegg and pricewatch.

I have a buddy who purchased all the parts from 1 company, but chose not to pay for assembly. Although he says there are many screws, its really not a big deal. The ability to order in barebones spec is really what attracts me to the asus/super talents in the first place. If I go prebuilt I will possibly go with another company.

    Here you go.

I ordered one Z63a barebone for my uncle with DVD-RW. I received it, well packaged and comes with all accessories (including a carrying case and a Logitech wireless mouse). I spent a lot of time for searching, I found it's the cheapest one. Computerhq.com offers lower price, but no optical drive comes with your barebone. You can compare.

For CPU, try mwave.com or even on Ebay.

Here is what my uncle got:

    - Asus Z63a with DVD-RW: $748 (shipping included)
    - Pentium M Sonoma 2GHz: $320
    - 2x512MB DDR2 4200 Crucial memory: $86 (won on Ebay, brand new, works well)
    - 60GB HDD 7200rpm : $165
    - Intel 2915 Wirless Card : $30 (new, on Ebay)

He has his Windows XP Pro CD from the university. Since he is a staff, he paid only $10.00. Yes, it a legal copy as long as he is still employeed at that university.

You can do a math. You do it for your own risk. However, if you don't take risk, you don't learn anything new. You see my point, don't you? Hope this will help you.

If this was yesterday, I would have argued with you. However, after some more research, ive found some decent pricing on Asus pre-built machines, not to mention that going the barebones route really isnt any cheaper when you get down to the nitty gritty.

I am still now considering a pre-built Asus, the only thing that will shy me away is that the "out the door" price is exactly $200 more than the other notebook I am really fond of (HP DV1000). I need to decide if the name and apparent quality of this entry level Asus system is worth the extra price. The 2 machines are very very similar, with the HP hosting a few nifty options that the Asus does not. One thing that is comforting to know is that Asus makes its own motherboards, etc and isnt (as far as I know) a company that contracts out to others, such as Quanta - I may be wrong here though.

I really do wish I could put my hands on the Z63A before making this decision...too bad they are nearly impossible to find in stores.
