Hi all, I am based in Singapore and although Asus listed the A8Jm model on their Singapore website, it seems the local distributor will not be bringing in this model. Instead they offered me A8Jc which comes with T2300 1.66MHz CPU and GeForce 7300 video. Their sales department in Singapore was not helpful when I asked if I could place a special order for it.

Does anyone know where in Asia (e.g., Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia) or online I can order this version and have it delivered to Singapore? Thanks.

BTW, what is your experience with the Asus sales and support services and are they helpful in solving your problems?

I think you can get the A8Ja in Singapore right? If A8Jm isn't available, you could try that (x1600) instead, comparable performance.

ASUS support... in North America - read my review :)

Nope, I tried talking to the sales people in Asus this afternoon and they told me the model they have is the A8Jc. There was no mention of the ATI x1600 version at all. Either they are not bringing in the model or the sales guy did not know.

They recommended the A6Jm which is the 15" model. I find it too big for my needs (I travel half the time); 14" is about my limit.

    Any suggestions?

I think they're trying to dupe you into buying the ones they have. Try PM dysfunctiotnal --> notice the spelling :). He's in Singapore, and I was asking him questions about some A8J models before buying here. I'm pretty sure he saw the A8Ja/m models ... but contact him just in case.

I'm not sure if you can order from Taiwan, but Taiwan has the A8jm and you would get the best deal here, because Asus is a Taiwanese company and most everything is made here.

Is there a website to order from Taiwan? I googled Asus and all I got was the official product website; there is no link to any online order or retailer.

Just following up on this thread.

As mentioned by others in this forum, I went to Best Denki in Singapore to have a look at the A8Ja on display there. It is configured as follows.

    CPU: T2300 (1.66MHz)
Graphics: ATI x1600 (Hypermemory 256MB, not sure how much dedicated memory)
    OS: XP Home
    HD: 80GB 5400RPM (partitioned into 20:60)
RAM: 1x512MB standard (additional 1x512MB as a free upgrade from Best Denki)
Connection: WiFi a/b/g, BT 2.0, 5 USB, 10/100 LAN, Modem
    Price: S$2699 (approx. US$1689) inc. 5% VAT
Warranty: 2 year International parts + labor
Other free gifts: mouse + bag

As I was kinda hoping to get a laptop w/T2400 or above, I will be heading to Hong Kong next week to check out the offers there. I will post a comparison on the pricing and configuration.

I don't speak Chinese very well, and I can't read anything. The only place I found was Yahoo Auctions in Taiwan. There are some dealers that sell there. I think it goes for around $1350 USD. The strange thing is, The Asus A8jm and W3j are like the exact same price. The W3j comes with the T2300 1.66ghz while the A8jm comes with the T2400 1.83ghz. I found that strange because it's listed for about $70 cheaper than the W3j on the Asus Site.

You are probably right on the graphics card but I checked the HD capacity specifically and it was 80GB.

i think the A8JA with X1600 uses 512MB hypermemory, 256MB on X1600 and additional 256MB from system ram..

btw, i bought my Asus A6JA at singapore last june 4, 2006.. they have a PC SHOW event that time which offers discounts and freebies, i think the next event will be on Sept2006 ..

The A6JA retails at S$2898 .. but i was able to buy it for S$2600 (usd$1654) .. after the PC SHOW, the price reverts back to S$2898

    standard specs are: T2400 1.8Ghz, X1600, 15.4inch, 100GB 5400 hitachi driver, DVD multiburner, 1-pc 1GB 533Mhz memory, built-in bluetooth, wifi-A/B/G, 8-cell battery pack, asus optical mouse and bag

then because it is a PC SHOW event, i got additional freebies
    1) asus gamepad
    2) external 40GB 2.5inch samsung harddisk with USB2.0 enclosure
    3) 1GB miniSD kingston memory
    4) extra 512MB 533Mhz SODIMM ( my setup is now 1.5GB SODIMM ram)

Since I'm not from singapore, I got a additional 104sgd tax refund at the airport..

So when buying some computer parts in singapore, the cheapest time can be on
    Feb2006 - IT SHOW event
    June2006 - PC SHOW event
    Sept2006 - COMEX event
    Nov 2006 - SITEX event

Another update, this time from Hong Kong. I have been checking out the local computer centers in Wanchai and Mongkok. A8Ja/c are both available; one dealer told me to expect the A8Jm by end July. Price for A8Ja is HK$12980 (US$1675 before bargaining) with extra 1GB RAM thrown in.

Interestingly, I saw the W7 and I must say it is quite stylish in black (T2300) or white (T2400). The black model is listed at the same price as the A8Ja for 512MB RAM and GF7400 256MB card in a much smaller package (same size as the Sony SZ series, about 1.9kg).

More from China and Hong Kong tomorrow.

Unless you purchased your machine in the same market as c.trader, this doesn't necessarily mean that the machine he is being offered has the same sized drive. Asus makes minor adjustments to the Ensemble models for different markets, or makes changes based on component availability.

BTW, the A8Jm is readily available here in Australia. Perhaps it might be worthwhile seeing if anyone will export to Singapore?
