    Hi guys,
I thought about putting this in the "what should I buy" thread, but I've already figure that out. The Asus warranty and 9800GS won me over.

The question then becomes, where to buy. Unfortunately it's not as simple as the lowest price, because I'm in a slightly weird situation.

Currently, I'm in Perth, Australia, but in 2 days (Friday 28th) I'm leaving for (and arriving in) Seattle, WA (funnily enough, the abbreviation for the state I'm in doesn't change :p ). I have around $3500 Au to pay for the laptop (which should cover the exchange rate - I'll be saving US dollars this way so it works out), in a Mastercard account with an Australian Bank.

What I want to know is if there's a reseller I can order with that can ship the laptop to my US address quickly, and whether it's best for me to do this once I arrive in the States, or if I can do it before I leave (which means less time without the laptop there). I know my US address, so that's not a problem.

I looked at xoticpc, but they don't accept foreign credit cards - is my best bet then to wait until I get to America, and open an account there, and transfer the money through?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice anyone can offer. :)

    -David

Will newegg.com accept foreign credit cards? They offer overnight shipping in the U.S.. They are a highly reputable and reliable company.

They are California, not sure that will help you unless they will FedX it up to Seattle.
    Good luck.

    Ooops. Guess not:

"No Purchase Orders, Fax or C.O.D. orders will be accepted. We do not currently accept international credit cards at this time."

Thanks guys. I guess wire is an option as well, though it means I need to get in early tomorrow. I'm also not adverse to buying one at a store, especially since that removes the waiting time (which matters to me since I'd like to accustomise myself to the laptop). Even if it costs a little more, I end up saving with postage. Any ideas?

I don't think the A1 or A2 versions are available in stores, since they are reseller versions. So unless it happens that a reseller is located in your area, there's not much chance of having it directly in hand...

That's bad news. I guess I might have to live without RAID. I really just don't want to have to wait 2 weeks into work before I even have a laptop at hand. It means there's much less I can do when I'm not in the office.

Thanks for your help guys - if I do decide to go for an X1/2 in a store, are there any stores that are recommended/have good prices?

    Thanks!

I believe the X1 and X2 are exclusive to BestBuy and Newegg, respectively.

Ok.... is there any version of the Asus G50vt I can get at a shop? :p

Or am I restricted to online?

EDIT: nvm, just realised that bestbuy has stores. I'll go to the one in Bellevue soon after I arrive and grab an X1. Dual hard drives and bluray are nice, but ultimately I'd rather spend the money on more accessories and games. :)

Thanks, but it's far more expensive here, plus I'm leaving in 10 hours. :)

I've ruled out the X1 because of screen resolution, so I'm hunting the web trying to find one of the other models at a store. I guess I'm going to have to just deal with ordering online and waiting. :(

The second most important question to what notebook to buy is where to buy it. Do you buy locally from a big box store or on-line? If on-line, from who?

A lot of the on-line stores are only selling boxed computers. Too many don't know the product. And too many aren't there for the consumer after the sale.

Regardless of who you buy from, it's always recommended to contact the store first. Are they competent? Do they have a good customer service track record? Is the notebook actually in stock? How long have they been in business?

For those who can't settle for something off the shelf, will the store customize your notebook for you? If so, are they authorized to do so?

    You can checkout on-line re-sellers at http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Portable_One_Inc.

    Thanks!

I'm now in the US, and it's hard living without a laptop. I reckon I'll probably settle for another model if then G50VT's are only online.

As before, any advice is both welcome and appreciated.

    well...i pulled alot of "strings"
    microsoft live cashback...$128
    fatwallet.com cashback $48
    asus rebate $100
i got it from gentechpc ebay store...messaged them about anything extra they could provide...they included a 320gb external hard drive for free...trying to sell that for around $70...
so if u subtract all that from $1599...it comes down to $1250...n ya...just wanted to get the most out of my minimum wage savings...so went above n beyond cheapness

ASUS has been very quiet about this but they have a $100 rebate running on the A1 & $150 on the A2 for February. At least up until this weekend none of the the usual suspects (NewEgg, Amazon, Xotic) had links but I found it on the ASUS site itself: ASUS February 2009 Rebates; other models included too.
