Wow, I don't know what you can get for that much over here. We've always been screwed over when it comes to notebook pricing, what with GST and stuff. The cheapest Asus notebook available here that can play high end games fluently is the G50VT-A1 but that is already almost $1000AU over your budget....
If you be content with a much weaker notebook within your budget that would be fine, but you wouldn't be able to play high end games very well. Other laptops would include the dv5t , M50VM and the Sony FW.
All of those phones have pretty midrange GPU but they're the best you can hope for with that budget. -
Thanks plasma, for the ASUS M50VM you mentioned, would that be able to handle F.E.A.R? on medium settings for "OK" graphics without lag and problems?
im an ASUS fan, not really wanting a HP or SONY, unless HP is better for gaming than ASUS? -
Plasma, I might be wrong, but knowing that it is US-based forum I believe xilerate meant US Dollars...

thanks adique, ive recently seen an ASUS laptop with specs of:
- centrino 2 inside (core 2 duo 2.4ghz)
- 4 gig ram
- ATI radeon HD 3650 256mb
will this run most games smoothly, ive got an ASUS laptop atm, but tried to run F.E.A.R had luck running it, but no luck playing it with decent graphics without lag, so wanting to upgrade and wondering if those specs would run F.E.A.R? -
Well, I would think it could play FEAR perfectly on Medium. Hell, maybe even some high if you don't go crazy with the resolution.
Regarding the GPUs, 3650 < 9650M GT. I think you should go for the M50VM, or maybe even an N series. -
Oh, and here's an idea. You could get this laptop from xoticpc. They ship internationally, including to AU. So, it's base price ($1259) into AUD ($1769) + $250 shipping cost = $2019. (EDIT:2220 with GST) It might be more complicated than that but that's pretty much it.
The base specs are very beastly:
Model: Asus N81VP-C1
Display: 14" HD LED Glossy (1366x768)
CPU: Core 2 Duo T9550 2.66GHz
RAM: 4096 MB DDR2 800MHz
HDD: 320GB 7200RPM
CD: Super Multi DVD±R/RW/CDRW
Wireless: Built In WIFI & Bluetooth
That's basically better than anything else over here, with the screen, CPU, GPU, HDD and design running rings around other similarly priced laptops here. The 4650 is at least 15% better than the 9600M GT and will play FEAR fine. -
- asus
- centrino 2 inside ( core 2 duo 2.4 ghz )
- 4 gig ram
- ATI radeon HD 3470 256 mb
will this run FEAR and CRYSIS well on medium settings for "OK" graphics with out lag ? -
If I'm to be asked, you're advised to wait till the ASUS' K-series is launched. The potent Radeons HD 4860 might be ideal for your gaming needs and posted budget. There is a speculation/restless anticipation thread for those who wait. No solid information so far to be found there though. But its most likely within two months from now - if you can wait this long for it to materialise, you may not regret that!
-
ok thanks adique, will the k series be gauranteed to be under $2,000 AUSTRALIAN when it is launched or you dont have solid information for that yet?
cheerz! -
-
ok thnks a lot for your help adique, so you recommend me getting the k series and its worth the wait and worth the money ?
-
Noone can say beforehands about it being worth anyone's money. But I actually CAN guarantee you, that there is a number of people here waiting for - not specifically K-series, but the Radeon 4860 (and 4830) - to be launched. Me including.
On a side note xilerate, do you know Tina Turner's song "We don't need another hero"?Well, if you could apply it to the number of separate, but monothematic threads you create, the community would be thankfull!
Yes, including me.

I'd say go with go with a g50vt series hands down. I have the x5 version (which you probably couldn't get in Australia), and I get ~30 FPS in Crysis with all settings on high, ~100 fps on low, and ~ 60 FPS on medium.
My g50vt-X5 cost 899$ USD (1,253 aud), which is incredibly cheap for having a 9800 series GPU. Since x5 is Best Buy (US) only, take a look at getting one of the others in this series (x1, x2, etc.)
This series is THE BEST performer for graphics in the sub 1,000$ price range and even blows away some ~2,000$ systems. Seriously, look into it and good luck finding a company that ships to AU. Even if you have to pay a lot of extra $ for shipping, it will still be worth the price difference compared to other more expensive systems. -
I could even second that had the notebook have a neutral-colour trim like the G70(?) and... had I not read (well, tbh only seen ;] ) the G-series related horror-stories thread. But hey, I'm not on the gaming rig market, so my advices might be a lil skewed.

For 17"+
*($1500 budget and below)*
- Sager NP5793 (Clevo M570RU) .... its hot right now since Sager is making it fully loaded with 9800M GTS and even Blu-Ray drive to liquidate its stock so that they can focus on the new (but slightly more expensive) NP5797.... Clevo M570TU/ETU.
- Gateway P FX with 9800M GTS is another good choice but does not have better build quality and cooling than the Clevo M570RU.
- MSI GT725 .... fully loaded 17" with ATI HD 4850
*($1600 to $2000)*
- Clevo M570ETU (aka. Sager NP5797) .... new model with Montevina, quad-core and choice of GTX 280M or 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M
- ASUS G71G-Q2 .... the Q2 makes the list since its fully loaded with Nvidia 9800M, Q9000 quad-core CPU, and Blu-ray drive
- Arima W840 DI (aka. OCZ Whitebook, Alîenware m17, etc...) .... new 17" dual ATI 3870, quad-core and dual HDD
*($2000+ budget)*
- ASUS W90Vp .... 18.4" fully loaded with ATI HD 4870 X2 .... processor could be better (like a quad-core)
- Clevo D901C (aka. Sager NP9262) .... 17" with single/dual 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M/3700M, uses desktop quad-core CPUs, three internal HDDs, and the best notebook cooling design to date.
For 15"
*(sub-$1400 budget)*
- ASUS G50VT .... 15.6" with 9800M GS (budget high-end card)
- MSI GT627 .... 15.4" with 9800M GS (budget high-end card)
..... and the rest of the mid-range notebooks with Nvidia 9600M/9650M, ATI 3600/3650, etc..
*($1400+ budget)*
- Clevo M860ETU (aka. Sager NP8662) .... fastest 15.4" gaming notebook with Centrino 2 quad-core CPU support... and Nvidia 9800M GTS / GTX 260M / Quadro 2700M
Alîenware (except for M17 which is re-branded Arima W840) and .Dell does not make the list (mainly for the high-end systems), they are quite outdated and configuration upgrades are usually overpriced.
This is a bang for the buck list... if you want to pay for aesthetics and lights, then look elsewhere.
* please read the Clevo Guide for further information about Clevo and their international vendors. -
Guys, he said $2000 AUSTRALIAN. He lives in AUSTRALIA, where there are no Best Buy's and the cheapest G50VT I can find here is $2900 AUD. There is no X1-9 over here, nor is there any W90vp. There are Sagers but they all start at prices way beyond his budget of $2000 AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS. Example.
@MR Butter Biscuits
Please don't just copy and paste that bang for the buck list and leave without reading that he's aussie and specifically wanted an Asus.
The K series is a decent choice but seeing as how the N51F (15.4", 130MGT) is already $2400AUD, the K50 would definitely be $2500+. -
What about ebay? They certainly have some and I know many sellers do international shipping.

This is the best i could find in Aussie for under 2k. Its got a 3650 which is a mid range card and will play most newer games at medium settings. Let us know how it goes. Sucks buying is Aus hey, no lower spec lappies have a decent video card in them. This one has a 9400cpu which should really be paired with a high end gpu to make it a gaming machine. I've got a low specced F8Va with a 6400 and a 3650 which i picked up for 1200 AUD in Asia, does well for a 14" laptop that plays games at med settings.
