Well, my girlfriend is headed off to college this year and shes looking for a laptop to bring with. I generally would not have any problems selecting a laptop for her but shes on a budget and I haven't been reading up on notebooks since I got mine for college last (G1s!).

Shes looking for a moderately powerful computer decent enough to game every so often. A high(er) resolution screen of 1440x900 or more. All for under 1500.

I was looking around on newegg and saw the F8va but since I haven't been researching, I don't know much about them and if they are good. If anyone has anything to contribute it would be appreciated!

Thats definitely one that would fit the bill. The A1 seems like the better option as its a little cheaper.

I forgot to mention, she would prefer a size of 15.4.

How much battery life does she need? Because as a G1s owner myself, and a frequent reader of these forums, I know that Asus isn't exactly known for longevity.

It might help to state what kind of budget she's on.

True but the new Montevina platform that the M50Vm is based on is doing quite well. If you upgrade to a 9 cell you have mucho battery power.

If it was for school, while in school I think I would be totting around a MSI Wind, simply because its all I would need for typing notes and doing work and it is super small/light/portable. Important so you can keep desk space and things. Outside of the classroom back at home to do all the other stuff anything like a M50 or even lower model would be fine. Battery power wouldn't be important at this point anyways since a power plug would be nearby.

and jewbilee if you like the G1S, you should have a look at the new G50V-A1 its the newest gaming model that is taking over the G1S.

Yup, max budget is 1500 but ideally were looking at around 1250. Battery life isn't so much as an issue. She has no problem carrying around the charge if needed and she doubts shell be bringing it to class much. Its more or less a desktop that she can easily carry around if need be. Its looking like the M50Vm-A1 is taking the lead as of right now.

Your GF games?? you are a lucky dude. Get the M50Vm if you still want the 15.4" screen, get F8XX series if you want lighter smaller screen, fit your budget and your criteria. But for schooling, I would consider smaller and lighter. I would consider 14" or 13.3" screen. I had the 15.4" and 17" before for schooling. First few months, no problems at all. But when notes stack up and more books to carry around and stay longer on campus, then my shoulders start feeling the pain around the strap.

ghettocowboy: I completely agree. I got my G1s as a gaming notebook I could carry around to class with me. Mistake. Its too big and clunky for that... I've been trying to convince her but some lessons are hard learned. Either way, shell be happy though and thats all that matters (awwwww).

You can do both, the Wind is like $500 and then grab a $1000 notebook. Lots of cheap 2nd hand stuff. I mean check out something like

    this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=278507
M50SV for like $1000 and its only a month old.

I just sold my C90S in pristine condition for $900 and its a super great DTR (desktop replacement) If I was schooling full time and found that I needed a laptop for school most definitely this is the route I would take.

As for the WIND they have there own site. http://msiwind.net/
