Which asus laptops/netbooks are fanless?
i'm interested in ones that can take 4GB+ RAM.
-
..None of them?
As far as I know - two options for reasonably powerful and passively cooled pads or tablets with good keyboard options turning up. Any upcoming z-60 based tablets (an amd apu - will run Windows 8). And the tablets/phones with tegra 3 chipsets.
The tegra 3 devices run android (until the Windows horrors show up). But technically speaking, you could get away with plugging your tegra3 phone to an hdmi monitor, and use a bluetooth keyboard to type on. Have the phone on speaker, put skype on an lcd, that sort of thing.
Some of the flat rubber-plates you can fold up like a stiff piece of cloth actually work really well for keyboards. Same with the foldable ones in hard plastic. Are several that don't cost much, and actually work now. I have an lg 4x I've used like that. Not.. quite flying nanorobots projecting a virtual keyboard and a virtual screen holographically.. yet. But it works for now. -

Here is one STYLISTIC Q572 - Fujitsu Technology Solutions although I'm not sure if its fanless.
Other tablets with z-60 should be released at CES. -

Here are the only 3 I know of:
ASUS - Eee- ASUS Eee PC X101CH
ASUS - Eee- ASUS Eee PC 1015CX
ASUS - Eee Families- ASUS Eee PC 1011CX
And they suck.Cedar Fail.

I wouldn't buy anything with and Atom in it
It's so slow I would fall asleep. -
It looks like there is one that can take 4GB and is 4GB but isn't fanless, asus lamborghini 4GB RAM, with Intel NM10 express chipset. But I guess not fanless, so i'm not interested in that one.
But i'd think anything with that chipset has promise as might be upgradable to 4GB RAM.
I checked those you mentioned, ALLurGroceries , but don't see much hope for 4GB RAM.
I've read that the X101CH has 1GB Soldered in.
The 1015cx is NM Express so thought maybe.. but it could have its RAM soldered in too, and even then i'm not sure if it'd take 4GB. I guess perhaps same kind of thing goes for the 1011cx. I read that at some point asus had the bright idea of soldering ram into their netbooks. -

1015CX looks like it's soldered too: how to replace hdd keyboard of asus 1015cx - YouTube
Not all of their recent netbooks are soldered, I think it's these super slim fanless ones. -
"In this video we open the very pathetic asus 1015CX. The requirement was to upgrade the ram from 1GB to 2GB. But sadly this netbook does not even have a ram slot to upgrade. It has 1GB ram which is hardwired to the motherboard. nevertheless we show you how to upgrade the HDD and keyboard. Big let down by asus on this laptop."
seems there is one with 2GB but I don't see one with 4
Asus 1015CX-WHI004S Intel Atom N2600 1.6GHZ 2GB 320GB 10" Netbook -
Why do you want fanless, there are 11'' laptops with a fan, but they are so silent you never hear them.

If you have sensitive and/or young ears you can definitely make out the high pitch of a small fan.
-
If the fan isn't spinning too fast it shouldn't make a high pitch noise, there are good laptops with low power processors than have the fan stopped most of the time or it runs really slow. I guess the best way to find out which ones are good is just to go to a store and check them personally.
-
A laptop that has the fan(not running slowly but) -stopped- -most- of the time would interest me though. (I know it's a bit of a risk as one model of the machine might make the fan run more frequently, but i'm still interested in it). Any you know of.
I can't test in shops, there's too much background noise. I hear it when using a laptop in the very quiet familiar places that I like to use it - like my room where i'd even locate a humming acdc adaptor and replace it. -
I don't really know which ones are quiet, but you can probably find if you search long enough. Maybe professional reviews or consumer reviews, it's just going to take some time, since not many people are interested in silent notebooks/netbooks, and those interested in silent PCs usually get HTPCs, which are much easier to find without fans.
-
I did say fanless, i've said it so many times. That means not asking other people for their opinion on how much noise the fan makes. There would be no fan when it's fanless.
BUT, *You* mentioned knowing of laptops whose fan is STOPPED(not just low, but STOPPED) most of the time. That is as good as fanless for me, as it's essentially fanless most of the time. I've never heard of such a thing and I have read reviews. Did you imagine it? If you actually have heard of it then i'd appreciate any info on that. Otherwise, from what you're saying now, it looks like you don't have anything to add. I can see it looks like Asus isn't the way to go though, as I don't see fanless 4GB. (and one fanless Asus netbook that might've been upgradable to 4GB given the processor and chipset, has the RAM hardwired so isn't).. -

You might find something a few months down the line, there are very low power (~10W) ivy parts coming out according to this rumor. That's probably just borderline for fanless, if someone is willing to design a chassis that acts like a giant heatsink (probably at the expense of thickness) maybe it will happen. The big promise for cedar fail largely hasn't materialzed save for those few Eee PCs I listed earlier. I haven't found any others by different manufacturers, but I didn't do an exhaustive search.
-
I didn't say quiet, I said silent. I came across something a while ago so I can't remember what it was, but I remember about it having the fan off most of the time and only turning on during heavy workload or something similar. Anyways It should be much easier to find than fanless notebooks that have something better than an atom in it, which I would never use.
never mind I did say quiet, but I meant to say silent.
In any case it might run with the fan off under low workloads if they put decent heatsink. As for now the Z-60 chip from amd seams like the only decent option, until Haswell arrives. -

I'm not sure what you are referencing, but the lowest power Ivy out now is 17W.
-
Not right now, there was an article about Intel releasing 10-13W processors based on Ivy bridge before Haswell, but those aren't out yet. It should be out next month though and apparently that's what the Surface Pro uses, so ralphzak you might want to wait for the Surface pro to come out.
Also I found a thread where owners have good responses towards Lenovo Thinkpad T510/520/420 some claim that they never hear the fan spinning and apparently it is a really good laptop too. The T530/430 are out too but T530 has some bad reviews because of a worse keyboard.
In any case here is the threadhttp://www.gears lutz.com/board/remote-possibilities-acoustic-music-location-recording/716780-quiet-excellent-laptop-2012-a.html (link won't work on this site, copy and paste both parts of it seperately)
I also checked Lenovo's website and their G series has a fan control feature and G585 uses the AMD E series chips which are only 18W, so that might be good too but I don't know about that. So probably the only choise for you right now is Lenovo.
Bad link let me fix that.
WTH is wrong with this, it keeps putting the wrong link even when i don't want to make it into a link.
Sorry had to split the URL in two, dumb autocorrect kept messing it up.
Btw, does the new ASUS Taichi 13'' have a fan, and if it does how about the Lenovo Yoga. -

It's word filtered, we like to keep it clean here and certain things are collateral damage, like links to that audio forum and certain optical drive manufacturers.
Also, please use the edit button instead of posting twice in a row, I've had to merge a few of your posts now to keep this thread clean. -
Sorry about that, I usually start a new post when I talk about something else, will try to edit more.
And back to the topic, from the pictures on Google it seemed that the Taichi was fanless, but I just watched a video where it had tiny vents on the bottom, so most likely it has a fan.
