I'm looking to get a new notebook and as a Systems Administrator I like the idea of the Asus Whitebox method of building your own. I've seen a lot of good comments on the M6NE but has anyone here own or had a chance to see an A2K model. I'm not really concerned with battery life, as for the most part, I'll be using this in the living room so I can have it plugged in. The pricing I've been getting is also pretty close so that really isn't much of an issue either. Typically, it will be used to play the odd game, surf the net,and do the odd bit of paperwork. If I really need some horsepower I can always turn to my gaming rig. Any comments would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

Just as a side note, I've been told the Asus M6Ne has been superseded by the Model M6S. It looks to have the exact same specs as the Ne.....

Wow, what a pointless first post from me...[:I]

Thanks for the info, I did do a quick search on google on the M6S and curiously every site that mentioned it was in Australia. Hmmm. ;)

I am awaiting my Asus A2K to arrive some time hopefully before the new year! it's got an AMD64 3000+ processor with an 80G HD (5400rpm), 512RAM, and a radeon 9700pro 128MB video card (i do like the fact that u can configure it to a certain degree). I heard the speakers are pretty good (altho i just invested in a pair of bose multimedia speakers that rock!) but i just hope the fan isn't too noisy and isn't too much of a prob. So long as it lets me play HL2 and World of Warcraft with no probs i dun care! i'll jus turn up the speakers! it'll look something similar to: http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=A2000K%20Series&langs=01

i'll try keep ya posted if i dun get too carried away!

Thanks for the update, in the end I went out and bought a Z9000. I decided battery life was more important than game playing, and while not as good as say the M6Ne it was still in my price range. I can always play games on my gaming rig in the "man cave" downstairs, but in a pinch I can still play games on the laptop. HL2 does run though on low settings.

Jimmeh, check your CPU when you get your laptop when you get it. The big wholesaler of Asus here in Canada had mistakenly marketed Athlon 2800 and 3000 XP-M socket 754 processors as Athlon 64 mobiles. They did catch their error after a month or so, but I think some retailer/system intergrators may not have caught this.

The 2800 and 3000 XP-M's use the same core as the Atlon64 mobiles but are more closely related to the semprons as the 64 bit extension are disabled on the chip. Apparently these chip were realeased earlier this year before the Sempron brand was ready to ship and AMD needed to a product to compete in that section of the market. (according to my AMD rep).

Still from what I was able to find out in my research it should be a great gaming laptop. I'd still like to a quick review once you get it as they're are a few guys around the office that are looking at getting the A2K.

    Cheers,
