I live in Canada, and I checked the Canadian Asus site and found that it has so many models all with random letters as model numbers, it's hard to compare all at once. Can anyone who is very familiar with Asus models point out which models are best suited for these needs?
- 15-16"
- University lectures, so it needs to have at least 2-3 hours battery life
- Not too thick
- Stylish minimalist design, no plastic or brushed aluminum please, prefer gloss over matte
- Good quality screen, preferably higher resolution than the 1376x768
- Discrete graphics card at the ATI 5650 level
- Around $1000
Thanks!

So what, you want Magnesium alloy?
Disregarding that, here's some suggestions.
Newegg.com - ASUS N61 Series N61JQ-B1 NoteBook Intel Core i7 740QM(1.73GHz) 16" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
^Not sure of the screen quality on that one, has 1366x768.

Another 1366x768. =/
Can't really find any Asus's in your screen size range with higher than 1366x768 with a graphics card like what you want.
Can't really find anything much better on NewEgg, but there are some ideas. -
Those are US sites, I live in Canada. I don't think they can ship to Canada.
I'm not sure what material are MacBooks or Sony VAIOs made of, I prefer that sort of material, not the cheap plastic found in IdeaPads or the ugly brushed aluminum in the Acer TimelineX.
The Bamboo one looks really good but the graphics card is sort of lacking.
Oh and i3/i5 only please, I don't really need an i7, it puts more stress on battery as well without switching.
Generally which lines should I look at on the website? Do I have to find resellers for Asus or do they sell it themselves? -
Both aluminum and polycarbonate scratch pretty easily, as with most laptop materials. Polycarbonate is also flimsier than regular plastic, although being fairly impact resistant. Non-unibody Macbooks have noticeable flex and some models have issues with cracking.
I haven't come across an Asus with a good graphics card and an i3 or i5, with higher than 1366x768, and smaller than 17.3. Your best bet is to keep hunting Amazon Canada, NCIX, or any other online Canadian retailers. I'm not sure what companies ship to or operate from Canada as I live in the States. Sorry.
Which model is best suited for class/light gaming?
