    Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about these two laptops...both has centrino from 1.7 to 2.0 Ghz, 60 Gb 5400 RPM HD, 512 DDR2 ram. The reviews on these laptops are all positive, too. The only difference of these two models is the z71v comes with 128 MB Geforce Go 6600, the z70v comes with 64 MB ATI x600. So which one is better gaming wise? Does the extra 64 MB of video RAM really makes a lot of difference when playing the not very high-end games? (like Guild wars and GTA). It makes sense that the 64 video RAM one saves more battery, is that true?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

The 6600 is better. It is in the same range as the x700.

The GeForce 6600 is equivilent to the X700, as zazonz said. The X600 is about 1.5x slower than the 700. The 64MB will make a difference in some games, not all. But it's definitely worth getting.

I don't believe the amount of video RAM has any impact on battery life.

    Get the z71v! :asus:

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll get the z71v then. It's 50 bucks cheaper too. Come to think of it it's kinda weird...these two models have the same hardwares except video card, and the one with 6600 is cheaper than the one with ati x600? Weird lol

By the way does anyone owning the z70v (the ati x600 one) has any problem on the fans on the video card? I saw some posts saying that the fan for the video card is a bit noisy. Is it like that when u're not playing games? thx

First off, the Z70va is what really compares with the Z71v. This pits the 128MB X700 directly against the 128MB 6600 Go. Most benchmarks place the X700 slightly ahead of the 6600, but the performance difference isn't huge.

There are some other factors affecting the price difference you might want to consider. If you're interested in your notebook's appearance, far more people (myself included) prefer the sleeker, carbon fiber chassis of the Z70va over the slightly heavier, grey plastic Z71v. The Z71v has a "glossy" screen; the Z70va's screen is matte (non-glossy).

To me, the Z70va is the more appealing notebook. In fact, I just ordered one. Either way, however, you'll end up with a fantastic machine that plays games very well. Good luck with your decision!

umm just making sure you know, but there is an updated Z70v with a 128MB X700 card that's just starting to ship right now (whole controversy on that).

I have a Z70v w/ X600 and I have little to know fan noise when I play games (RTS mostly though)

The Z70V is made of carbon fiber and has a better screen then the Z71V, but the Z71V can out perform the Z70V (but has a less then great screen and made of plastic)... hard choice.

Buy which ever that fit your budget and your need. :)

But I agree with Llama, Z70v is made of better material, while Z71v give you the overclocking stability and advantage.

Sometime I wonder if Llama is an Asus undercover agent scouring these forums.

the z71v does not have a glossy screen! it's matte as well. the z71v also has a FSB dipswitch (i don't know if the z70v has that) so it can also overclock your p-m processors by 33% (works great on 1.7GHz P-M's and slower, with some success with the 1.8GHz) by upping hte FSB to 533 for 400MHz P-M's.

I like the design of hte z70v, but i hate the lip on the back of the screen (a huge pressure point in my backpack and makes me warry about it causing screen damage) which was one of the contributing factors to going for a z71v.

You've got a Z71v, I don't so you'd know much more about the screen. But, I've read several other reviews and posts tha claim the Z71 does in fact have a glossy, "sparkly" screen. Regardless, the Z70va is the bestest!

    Time for another Boilermaker!!

    Sparky, maybe.

    Glossy, definitely no.

Sparky is the technology of the future. Sony laptops have been sighted with them. Dell laptops have been sighted with them. Even Gateway laptops have been sighted with them.

    ehheh

haha! for sure... the first sparkly i saw was on a dell 8200 ("super bright UXGA" as dell called it). I'd like to see the z70 to see how its screen is different. but i'm very happy with my LCD -- awesome productivity with 1680x1050!

    Hey UwDave,

I have been running Guild Wars (and WoW) on my Z71V (1.73, 1gb, 60gb hd) and let me tell you, it runs SO well. Quite high frame rate, full resolution, and max graphics (al the highest options), and 2x Antialiasing. I was trully impressed, no overclocking the gpu, no excessive heat, and get this, I can play over 2hrs on a full charge.

Anyway, the only concern I have personally about the X700 is its partial shader3.0 support. My purist buddies at NVidia continue to remind me that Nv's gpu is a more thorough implementation of shader 3.0. In practice, however, I don't think it makes a big difference.

Let us know how you like the laptop you got (what'd you end up getting ? ... maybe i missed it)

    Cheers,

    Dan

now imagine that the stock is 250mhz on the core and 500mhz on memory. I easily overclock to 325/650 and when Whiteheat in the z71 forums, finishes the custom heatsinks, i'm sure i'll easily surpass 350/700 (which i can still do now, but the temperature is too high for my likings!) and quite possible 400/800 (now that would be a crazy nice overclock) and no fan during 2D operation ;) -- can't wait to see what happens.... with that potential, i think the z71v is definitly a winner in terms of performance!
