Finally, after holding the stock in their Fremont office for more than two months, Asus is finally going to release the Z35f, as late to the market as it may seem. For those who think the dedicated graphics in the W7 is just too much for you, or if you want something you can fully customize from the get go, this may be what you've been waiting for.

Distributor stock of Z33ae's has kept Asus from releasing this product in North America until now. It's awfully similiar to the W7, but a little more generic and without a camera.

Z35's were pictured on the site many times in the past. Right now I'm on the road don't have the time to search for them for our servers, but Eddie bought a Z35a and reviewed it...... chassis the basically identical to that.

    Awesome.

Thanks for the heads-up, good to know there's finally some movement on this model. I've been waiting for word on the z35f. Should be able to fill a niche for people who like the 13.3" form factor, but don't want the W7J or find the Sony SZ prohibitively expensive and inadequate. The integrated graphics may deter some people, but it should be a very solid and portable option. Great for students!

The option to configure it to personal preferences, too, is just the icing on the cake. The preconfigured Ensemble models are very slick, but it will be nice to customize a chassis with this form factor! I can keep under budget that way!

There are *too many* options in the 12" to 14" market right now..... and Asus is no different, having 4 in the US and more like 8-9 worldwide.

Great notebook, but there's always room for someone to complain, so there's the W7. The W7 is a great notebook and is my partner for a roadtrip I'm on, but let's face it, not everyone needs dedicated graphics, especially on something this small. The W7's are selling well, but I think there are a lot of people who are fooling themselves because they'll never use the graphics. At least this way there's really something for everyone.

I absolutely agree, the market's a bit flooded with 14 and 12-inchers, but I made up my mind that I liked the 13.3" form factor, and so my options were a little more limited.

If someone thinks they need dedicated graphics AND a small form factor, by all means, go ahead and get the W7J or bump up to the W3J or A8J.

I think there are a fair amount of notebook consumers, however, who recognize that a portable machine needs to have good battery life and ligt weight. Putting a slammin' GPU in will eat your battery and give the temp-sensitive squad another reason to moan about hot air.

The z35f *looks like* a very viable option for people who can leave the dedicated graphics in their desktop machines.

12" systems have been used for years as basic communication tools (internet, email, writing documents, im, etc)...... I know people who try to game on them, but it's a 12" screen. 13.3" is an odd size and honestly one I thought we'd need see again after 14" widescreens started coming out last year. 14" is certainly comfortable to do CAD on the road and that's what I would suggest W3's for...... The newest J model of course is meant for even more than that.. but it's still basically the same. Now, 13.3"... Personally, I don't game a lot, but having the same res as the 14" makes it just as "gameable" if I could make that a word.... but the form factor allows for a smaller footprint and lighter weight.. which is why just about everyone who picks out a W7 does so over a W3......... But, even at 14", the majority of consumers really don't need dedicated graphics....... so back to the Z35 and Z62f of course....

.. But like I've said before, most of Asus' fans aren't "average" and that helps explain why the W3v and W3j (W3 series on a whole) has been the best selling Asus notebook in the states over the last year and half....

It's true a lot of Z35f fans ended up going with the W7j after it was announced, but it's still a good model. The Z33ae was a fantastic little machine and I loved selling it for over two years, but the 12" regular ratio has sort of died and 12" widescreen is really for people on the go...... 13.3" is nice if you have the option.

lol, Cori, that's a pretty funny post!

Yeah, the only 13.3" screen I've actually seen in person is the SZ, and it just seems to make sense to me (the screen size and resolution, not the machine itself :p ).

12" and 14" widescreens are cool, but as I've been considering a portable notebook, the 12's look teeny and the 14's look clunky. Yeah Justin, same resolution side-by-side looks way better on a 13.3" than a 14" imo. I don't know about "gameable," 'cause of the size, but it's just easy on the eyes :)

    I'm just glad I do! :D

Well, he's on vacation right now, but when he's back, he should be pleasantly surprised :)

It does not have a magnetic latching system. For the size, it has to be carbon fiber, but no other Z models this year are.... but you can't get the weight and thickness of it without.

Specs... how so? It's a 945 chipset model.. it's about 12 1/2" x 9 x under 1 1/2".... basically same size as the W7... other than that, what are you looking for? It's a 13.3" WXGA screen, with the usual features of Asus' core duo barebones.

That I don't know... the lid is thicker and I know the major thing about that screen on the W7 is that it allowed the lid to be thinner...... so I can't say, but I don't believe so.

why don't all notebooks have magnetic 'latches'?

from a manufacturers standpoint, isn't it far cheaper and easier to insert two little magnetic strips rather than molding or cutting a bajillion itty-bitty plastic hooks and attaching them to springs and fitting them into grooves and popping in a sliding button through a hole in the front of the lid? granted they already have existing machines for latchwork and dumping them all would be a tremendous waste of resources...

It's a nice thought and you'd think it'd be cheaper, wouldn't you? I don't know if one is more expensive than the other, but the lid designs differ between the two a lot of times. A the magnetic lids often come to a tight fit where a finger pushed between the lid and the palmrest wouldn't lift seperate them. Often, on the models with more traditional latches, like the A series, they're beveled in a way that it's right for that type of latch.

Also, there are people who hate those latches... I don't know why, because they secure the lid in multiple places (4-5) instead of just 1 or 2 and they hold very well and can't break...... but some people... you know? So they've got to make something for everyone. Eventually all the systems will have those as long as they're designed from here on out really.
