Well, the forum users all know about ASUS, but for the internet people that browse through NBR and aren't members of the NBR Forum, they don't really know about ASUS.

They're looking at Dell, HP, Lenovo, the companies they hear about on CNET and PCMag. They don't look at the forums, they read the reviews, and they're only reading the reviews of the notebooks they know, a.k.a. Dell, HP, etc. That's where all the hits for those brands are coming from.

Also, Asus doesn't heavily market their products like Dell, Sony, HP etc. Asus's main customer are still OEM companies. Everyone in the computer industry and any tech savvy person would know the brand Asus and how great they are.

i remember when i bought my first computer (not knowing much about them) i got a sony vaio desktop. upon opening it up, the dvd drives were both asus, the motherboard was asus, and the video card was asus...they arent a bad company at all. however, most of the time you can get a better deal buying a dell.

one reason might be the cost. A G1S is around 1700$ a simillar dell can be had for much less.

I suspect that a reason why Asus is not popular is that it is not widely available.

For example, in my town, you can find HP, Apple, Toshiba, Compaq and Acer and most people have seen Dell at work, but no store sells Asus.

To be honest, I don't want everyone to own an Asus. Part of owning one is the "WTF is that" look on peoples faces when they see it. Then you tell them it's major PWNage. Maybe I'm vain, but I like that.

Sam, you describe me exactly. When I started looking for my new computer, I came to this forum and read a lot before I joined. I was going to buy a Thinkpad or a Dell or HP or maybe a Sony. I'd had Gateway desktops and a Dell laptop. I'd never even heard of Asus before coming here--and I'm happy to say I just bought a V2S!

Susan, I probably described you so well because I was just like you a year ago :D. I joined NBR, and my potential notebooks revolved around Dell, HP and Lenovo and maybe Apple. ASUS? Sager? Clevo? Who are they? :p

And staying around NBR for a few months, I really got to know the lesser known companies more. I began looking at ASUS notebooks to get, first W3J, and then it was discontinued (too bad really, it was awesome), then V1J, then V2...then, I won this MacBook :D. So I didn't need to choose a notebook anymore, it was given to me.

Remember, everyone was once a newbie ;).

Heh, when I joined, I had seen enough of Asus' website to know they made notebooks, and some of them were quite good, but I had never seen one, and figured they were only available in Asia and Europe, like LG and Samsung notebooks.

Most people haven't heard of Asus, and the ones who have know them because they are the world's largest motherboard maker. The fact that they make notebooks is pretty surprising to a lot of people.

And inspiron 1520 with same configuration (except DDR2 8600M GT and Dell 802.11n versus Intel 4945) and 3yrs warranty (versus 2 from asus, but 1 year accidental worths more), $40 mouse and $100 backpack is $2200 in Canada. G1S is $1900

My friends doesn't know about ASUS and they just go with acer,hp and DELL.
In Kuwait there's few shops sell ASUS Notebooks and i remember i see a new W3J i said i will go sometime later but it's now out of stock.
When i get my G1S shipped every one of my friends saids wow and they all want to switch to ASUS after that i bought a F3Sv for one of our family members.
They are all now know what i meant by ASUS before i buy one.

You're very kind. Honestly, I feel pretty out of it here with regards to age, gender, computer use, stage of life. Most of the posters here seem like they are either in college or just out. I'm gonna be a grandma this spring! Dig that. And guess what. I'll be the envy of all my peers when I show them the baby videos on my new ASUS V2S!

Congrats on your win. That's a wonderful piece of luck! Though they are pretty, Macs pretty much scare me. I feel like a stranger in a strange land when I have tried them out. My son wanted me to get one but I use a special work-related program that doesn't work on a Mac and switching operating systems is beyond both my knowledge of technology AND my daily available patience level. My first computer was an 8086 machine back in 1986 I think? Yeah. Back then it looked like Apple might be converting a generation--we worried that by getting what we called an IBM machine instead of an Apple would put us behind. Funny, huh. Does anyone here remember monochromatic displays? I think it was green characters (maybe yellow) on a black screen. Giant disks. Hard to imagine that in my lifetime I have gone from a manual typewriter with a cloth ribbon to a 5 pound Asus laptop.

    Sorry to digress.

Actually, to be more correct, a similar Inspiron is about $1600 in Canada. However, the G1S costs about $1700-1800 CND depending on where you by it. But with the G1S, you get a bag, gaming mouse, and DDR3 graphics.... which are way more than dell offers :)

wait a min.... the 1520's gpu comes with DDR2??? oh then there's no comparison at all!! g1s is definitely superior to the 1520 in gaming. I have the 8600m GT w/ 512mb DDR2, and that can't even compare to the 8600m gt 256mb GDDR3 gpu.
If this is the case, why would anyone want to buy a 1520 when they know the g1s is a better and cheaper notebook?

I have found the more u config it, the more of a deal it is for u. I got the g1s b1 w/4 gigs of ram and a 160gb external HD for 2100. the same type of spec 4 a insporn 1520 is $2544 (although it is not 2.4DC, it is 2.2DC) and the Vostro is 2485(its maxs out at a 160gb 5400 rpm hd and 2.2ghz dual core)

So, in both ways the ASUS is the best bang 4 the back, not to mention it has a lot better design and "cool factor" than dell. (not to mention it has a much better graphics card than the dell)

note: i config the dell with the similair warranty and accesories

Uhh, cause its not the cheaper notebook? It starts at like $800 with the 8600GT. Functionally, it comes out to around $1000, maybe $1300 after you add a better warranty. Nobody needs a T7700, 250GB hard drive, and Vista Ultimate - a T7100, 120GB, and Home Premium do just fine....

Asus is relatively new to the notebook scene, having only gained some notice over the last 4 years. As they're expanding their branded notebook line, they've had some growing pains and setbacks (battery issues on Z71V, R1F, and V6J, motherboard issues on M6V/Z70V, BIOS issues on V1J and G1S, heat issues on W3J, and bad hinges on A8J models). However, they are currently the 9th best-selling notebook brand in the world and their sales rate has increased over the previous period more than any other company except Apple. Add in their integration into retail chains, and I think they're on the cusp on being recognized in a wider circle than just computer forums.

    DELL 1520 / Asus G1S-A1
    CPU - C2D2.2ghz / C2D2.2ghz
    GPU - 8600m GT 256MB DDR2 / 8600m GT 256MB GDDR3
    RAM - 2GB DDR2 667mhz / 2GB DDR2 667mhz
    HDD - 160GB 5400rpm / 160GB 5400rpm
    Network card - Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-card / Intel® PRO/Wireless 4965 802.11 a/b/g/n
    Optical drive - CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive) / 8x DVDRW DL/LightScribe
Display - glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display (1680x1050) / glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display (1680x1050)
    Webcam - 2MP / 1.3PM
    Battery - 6 cell / 8 cell
Memory card reader - yes / no
OS - Vista Home Premium / Vista Home Premium
    Bluetooth - yes / yes
    Warranty - 2 year in home / 2 year International + 1 year accidental
Bonus: None / 160GB external HDD + gaming mouse + bag
    Price - $1809 - $325 (coupon) + $74.19 (MA tax 5%) = $1558.19 (free shipping) / $1729 (no tax + free shipping)

To sum things up, for an extra $171, you get all of the below in the g1s:
    1. Better GPU
    2. Better wireless card
    3. 1 year accidental warranty
    4. Asus gaming mouse
    5. Asus backpack

IMO, the G1s sounds like a better deal...However, you sacrifice the 2MP and a memory card reader.
Oh, and a couple more things i almost forgot. G1s has HDMI and eSATA output too. 1520 doesn't

    ......Dell coupons are your friend.

Also, the Vostro 1500 runs a bit cheaper, and you get WAY better customer service to boot. Regardless, very few people are going to upgrade to the T7500, especially at Dell's option price, and the T7100 is good enough for most people anyways.

The G1 is the better notebook, but you can get a pretty functional Dell for about half the price. 8600GT, dual core, 2GB memory, 160GB hard drive, and a 9 cell battery for under $900. Bump it to the T7500, and you're still at $1100 or so. Provided, of course, you wait for the best pricing, like I did.

The whole dell vs asus deal the asus is a much better machine. Even if it did cost you abit more the quality is there, the performance is there, and its got some style.

The dell is only cheaper if you get it on sale with a special cupon of sorts.

The C90 is from Asus tho and even cheaper than the dell :p I was able to put mine together for 1400$ and its performance is on par with the dell and just below the G1S (untill I upgrade the video card, then it will be higher)

    Maj0r pwn3dg3!

I first came to know and love Asus by using their amazing motherboards in a few desktop systems that I built, never once have they ever given me anything less then great reliable performance with plenty of great little extras that no one else has.

Asus, as a company, has r0x3d for a very long time, at least a decade or so, they are not newbies by any means, and will probably be the company I will go with as I purchase my first "real" notebook soon.

Guaranteed, the Asus is a much better machine. I just took offense to the statement that the Dell was more expensive. It sure as hell isn't; I paid $900 for a Vostro 1500 that gives me 95% of the functionality and performance as the $1900 G1s. And that was without coupons of any sort.

And the coupons aren't special, Dell has them ALWAYS. They took them off for a time while they were having supply problems, but other than that, week in, week out, I have yet to see any time other than those two weeks in the last two years where they haven't had a coupon of some sort going.

Yeah the cupons are just dells underhanded way of taking advantage of those with too much money or too little knowledge.

anybody on a computer forum knows about the constant dell cupon codes, but general joe doesnt, and ends up paying 400-600$ more just because of that fact.

I have wanted to buy a dell from time to time but the model that always intrest me is one of the ones that do not have a special cupon or sale.

If your really smart tho you wait for just the right time where you can stack a promotion, with a cupon, with a cupon.

Like all home office users get 200$ off any purchase of 1000 or more, that will stack with a cupon for 100$ off XXXX notebook/computer then go on ebay and get one of those 40$ off any purchase of 500$ or more.

Then stack them all up and make out like a bandit. Not everything always stacks tho so you have to do your research.

Most people I talk to (who are CS students) don't even know of ASUS. I'm always saying: "The guys who make a ton of motherboards...cd readers...etc" -- to no avail.

Anyway, they make great laptops which are typically just purchased by outside companies and rebranded.
