If Asus is the ODM for the new mac notebooks why cant they make a lapto that is 1in thin and have a superbright display with great viewing angles? i mean they have never made a notebook that is as light as small as the mac counterparts. and why dont they use lighted keyboards just seems it would make sence?

Macs are Macs, Asus is Asus.

They have made pretty thin laptops that I've ever seen(V6v, W2v)

The LCD isn't ASUS's responsiblity, look at companies like LG and Samsung.

ASUS can't be JUST like Apple, they probrably have a contract, as if they did, wouldn't they make Apple go out of business(Won't happen but they'll still be a threat/competitor)

Um... ditto..... the V6 is most like an apple without looking like one... if you know what I mean.

The W2 looks a lot more like a powerbook than the V6 does.... but if they stripped some things out of the W2, they could get it down to a 17" powerbook size.... it has a lot to do with what's inside and now that it's going to be intel inside.... if the graphics cards and featues are similiar, Asus should have no problem matching them size for size.

I mean more the new macs coming out since they are going to use the same parts as any pc laptops. I love my W2V it is very near powerbook size. But it would be nicer it it were all metal thinner and had a lighted keyboard. but who knows what the future will hold. the V6V is nice and it is close. As for the Lcds asus doesnt make them but they do choose which panels they are going to use. I honestly think asus make great laptops but some of their series def could have a better panel used. like the 12.1 panels that ive seen on notebooks that run 1280 by 800 seem to have better vewing angles than the 1280 by 768 ones on the w5a and my W2v panel could def use alittle more brightness. Just saying asus latops are near perfection, at least as perfect as a laptop can get just seems they could do just a tad better in some aspects.

Asus still gets most of their income from being an ODM and not being an OEM.

Apple is *notorious* for guarding their design -- as that in fact IS their biggest asset. They certainly will not hesitate to flex their legal muscle if another company's design comes close to copying their own, ESPECIALLY a company whom they trust enough to manufacture their machines for them.

Compounding that fact, I'm sure when Asus agreed to be the sole ODM for Apple (a pretty nice deal I'm sure, considering that Apple computer does command a nice premium over their Windows counterparts), Apple pretty much made them sign an iron-clad contract to not leak their designs in any shape or form. Breaking that contract will not only guarantee Asus losing a very prominent customer, it would also badly hurt their credibility, not to mention multi-million dollar lawsuits.

If you look at Asus's notebooks, they are very clean, and *almost* Apple-ish. The key word here being "almost". One can say that their appearance is very ibook/powerbook-ish, but there is no question that they are NOT duplicates -- Apple's design is still that much more elegant and cleaner.

    cheers,

    yass

    P.S. Hi everybody. I am back. :)

I think that Asus looks more like Sony vaio, not so much mac? One thing that I would like to see in PC notebooks is that smooth bottom (I was just thinking that iBook looks a little bit too gay to my taste). If Apple wants to make iBook look a little more elegant they should study that: http://www.finnishdesignshop.com/images/ball_iso.jpg

Or maybe ASUS can make Pallotuoli (ballchair) model? :D

    Another point to be made...
Apple has a more "clean and distinguished" look soley because of their hard working design team in Cali.
ASUS is hardware manufacturer that just got into design.
They're still doing a pretty good job though...

If the Z62f is any indication, the future customizable models are gonna be even less sleek and nice looking than current ones.

Yes, but expect ASUS Ensemble models to keep the slick and sophisticated appearance.

Yes the Ensembles will still be quite nice. I think we're all looking forward to the Lamborghini's also.

I totally agree that the Built on's are pretty bland. Almost as bland to consider calling them "generic whitebooks". Slapping a nice paint job on that should make it a bit better looking. Have you seen VoodooPC's Z71? ;)
