Other brands of notebooks tend to get 3+ hours easily. However, ASUS notebooks just seen to get 2-2.5hrs at most. Why is this?

    Example: Dell E1505 has 2.5-3.25 hrs on 6-cell 53Whr
    ASUS W3J - 2.5hrs on 8-cell
    ASUS V1JP - 2-3hrs on 8-cell 77Whr
    Lenovo T60 - 4-5hrs on 9 cell

Please note the number of cells and the runtime.

    Such as?

Hard to generalize with such question that provides almost no information at all.

If you are referring to notebooks such as the A8Js, it's because of the pretty powerful video card.

my z63a got 4.5 hours when it was brand new. it's about 14 months old now and I'm getting about 3.5 hours.

    seems pretty adequate to me.

The e1505 does not get 4 and is hard pressed to hit the 3 hour mark on a 6 cell battery.

Er...um. Asus uses a liquid cooling system without the liquid. It runs on ur computers heat and generates that into a cooler compound. If that has something to do with the batery i dont noe...but it does opt for a whisper quiet hard drive and cooler cpu/gpu temperatures.
O and Asus has dedicated higher end gpus. This does indeed feed the temperature and battery life. But stunning visuals is the advantage.
Asus laptops generate more power because it needs higher watts to support the gpu. Im not sure if this is already included with the higher gpu lower battery life or not but this could be the case.

You also need to note the processor speed, the graphics card(The x1400 on the T60, and x1400 on the e1505, x1600 on the W3 and x1700 on the V1) as well as the battery itself in terms of whr.

Yes, just as the last two indicated the power consumption of W3J and V1J is higher because of the GPU inside them, X1600 is at least twice as powerful as an X1400.So don't generalize things.Compare the ASUS laptops with the same specs, BTW , it was some DELL folk who got their laptops blown up.

The performance specs of the X1600 over the X1400 (being quoted truthfully at about twice as powerful) is really only when over 90% of the core is actually being utilized during 3D acceleration. During Windows 2D GUI use (minimal GDI acceleration required, hardly power consuming), an X1600 should really consume almost as much as any other video card.

    That's "should".

I mean, you're not doing power intensive tasks all the time -- so any GPU should really consume negligible power over a lesser "powerful" one.

    Again, that's "should".

However, this optimal fantasy world isn't quite as efficient as one would come to expect.

There are so many models of asus notebooks.

A few of them actually have really bad batteries. There is some truth to what you are saying.

Its not unique to asus. The w3j actually has a very low capacity 8 cell battery, it is still using one that is a few years old on the market.
The a8j has a 6 cell only so while its capacity is modern its size is actually small compared to the competition. Its battery is very small, like a 13.3 inch.
Theres nothing about asus that use more power but you have somewhat of a point, there are a few models they make and battery life is not part of the goal of the design.

also asus chose the higher brightness lcds on the market than dell.

The dell models are more uniformly designed for battery life. This is true they use the low voltage lcds, low power gpus, high cell optional batteries.

The W5F is the best example of an Asus laptop that I can think of that puts battery life and portability ahead of graphics power.

There are 3, 6, and 9-cell batteries. The 9 cell battery will last for easily 4.5-5 hours.

That is probably the worst example to use. w3j having a superior graphics card. Now 2.5 hours is below average. Average would be 3 hours. max would be 3.5-4hours and 2.5 being the min. the dell you are speaking of with 3+ hours easy, you are describing the maximum life there. take any mid size notebook with a 6 cell and integrated graphics and they will all get 3+ hours max. That includes the dell, z35f, w5f, z62f. all of those have integrated graphics and have a 6 cell battery.
