My G1S fan runs continuously:
- When performing low-intensity tasks like web browsing (such as now)
- When idle
- When "sleeping" (more about that in a sec)
- When the lid is closed
I expect the fan to run under heavy load, and that's fine. But mine runs all the time, and it's quite loud. Even if I leave the G1S with the lid closed overnight (which should put it in sleep mode), the fan keeps running. This happens even when the CPU load is down below 10%, as indicated in the Task Manager. CPU temperature when web browsing is about 65degC.
I performed a clean install of Vista when I got it, and only installed the necessary Asus apps, and tend to run a pretty clean machine (using a few small background apps like Nod32, the Logitech mouse driver, MozyHome, and Vista Battery Saver, but those are all very low load). Using the Asus display drivers for the 8600M GT.
I have not removed the tape from the vents, as suggested in other threads, in case this is a vital design feature to channel air over the HD. Still, I'd like to cut the noise. Any ideas?
(Oh, and the computer doesn't seem to sleep properly. Once in a blue moon it kicks into a very low power mode where the green power LED slowly pulsates, and THEN the fan turns off. But otherwise, something seems to be keeping it awake.)

I'm on my G1S right now to,
And indeed the fan actually runs a lot:
The CPU in the G1S doesn't get too hot (i has a more low temperature) but the GPU (the 8600M GT) gets really hot fast... that's why the fan runs all the time.
Now while i'm surfing this forum, listening to music and chatting my GPU is 62°C and the fan is running on the lowest mode (that's doesn't make a lot of noice)
But when i start up a game the fan indeed makes much more noice, but that's normal... especially for laptop.
And actually I don't hear the fan because I always use my headset ^.^
The only minus thing for me is the temperature of my GPU: under full load it gets like to 98°C !!! (Overclocked to 606/719) and i'm using the 169.04 driver and ive heard that it indicates 10°C wrong... so it can be that my GPU is like 108°C LOOOL -
Idling your temps are probably in the high 50s (given the above temp) which once again is wayyy to hot for the fan to stop running.
So the reason why your fan is on all the time is because your cpu stays in the temperature range that the fan should be on. If you get your cpu temps down to like 30* range, then you would probably see the fan go off. But with temps in the mid 60's just browsing the internet, you will never see the fan off. -
OK, thanks. I wasn't sure whether that was a normal temp for a Core2Duo or not. Good to know it's too high, I guess.
But the thing is that the CPU usage is very low (~1-3% right now), according to Task Manager, so it's a bit of a mystery. What's the most reliable (free) temperature monitoring software available? -

the fan on g1s is allways on. You just don't hear it, but if you put your hear next to it you will hear it running.
-
However, I took the cover off the CPU compartment just to check things out, and the temperature went from 62degC to 52degC at idle, and from 89degC to 73degC under a 10-minute CPU stress test. The fan is a lot quieter at idle with the cover off. Obviously this isn't any type of solution, but I wanted to see if it might be worth removing the tape from the vents on the CPU cover. -
Hum im so close of getting me a G1S. But dont like that it gets so hot hum.
But i guess its worth it? -
powerful notebooks will always run warmer than the mainstream ones... especially in the smaller chasis
-
I don't regret buying a G1S at all; it's been a great notebook. If I could 1) Get the fan to run on a lower duty cycle, and 2) Convince the notebook to go to sleep properly, I'd have no complaints at all. It's a lot of notebook for the price.

The fan will run permanently because the notebook gets quite hot.
w.r.t. removing tapes: some people reported increased WiFi and HDD temperatures after doing so. So take tape removal with a grain of salt. -

Oh I don't know. Maybe it was an external impression (i.e., no sensors) for the users. Just check that thread.

I have the same problem with my A8js (T7200, Go7700, 3gb, HD 200gb 7200rpm), that's why I started this thread. However, the CPU temperature on mine, using the default settings and the GPU at the lowest clock is around 40º under XP, not the 65º you report. I use Notebook Hardware Control to decrease the fan RPM (and undervolt), but even with the decreased RPM I only get the temps of 45/47. With vista there's a 2º increase. The problem with NHC is that the author is taking his time to develop a fully compatible Vista version. It work with Vista, but has some bugs (ex. if you put the computer in sleep mode, NHC is kept on high performance on waking up, if I'm not mistaken), but it has been a blessing to my hears.

I suggest update BIOS to latest version, maybe the fan policy has changed.
Also be aware that not only the CPU temp influences the fan speed; on most current notebooks the same fan has to cool the GPU, as well. So if the GPU runs hot the fan will run regardless of the CPU temp. -
On the sleep issue, I changed the power plan to Balanced from High Performance, and that seems to have enabled the notebook to sleep properly (i.e. fan off, HD off, power light pulsing slowly). Plus, the fan seems less hyperactive in normal use, even though my customized Balanced plan isn't all that different from the High Performance one. I assume there's more going on under the hood than Vista's Advanced Power Management Options would imply. -
Change thermal compound to at least AS5(99%silver) or Colaboratory - which is great, but is a 100% metal and needs caution. Undervolt your CPU, and clean it up. You can have ultra quiet and powerfull laptop. Ultraquiet powerful pc is a Desktop with big heatsinks and heatpipes etc.. or water cooling. God You got guys such high temps! Really core 2 duo is so hot?
-
my G1S fan is always running too my CPU temp is around 61-73 degrees
-
are there any Core 2 duo CPUs that will be more cooler and good for intensive undervolting?
-
ULV it's what you're probably looking for. For non-intensive tasks such as office work, those should be fine. But they are usually put in ultraportables, not in 15.4 gaming systems.... so this is not a question really fit for the G1S fan thread
And the G1S fan will always run. The computer will overheat within seconds otherwise, the components emit too much heat for the situation to be otherwise.
Why does my G1S fan run constantly?
