I hate to say it, but I'm already having issues with my brand new G50V-A2.
It's slow. Obnoxiously slow. Here is what I'm talking about:
- After resuming from hibernation/sleep, sometimes it takes up to 30 seconds for the "ASUS smart login" (face recognition application) to load, and sometimes it doesn't load at all.
- After resuming from hibernation/sleep, and after logging on, the computer is very slugish/slow for up to 2 minutes.
- When using programs, the pointer will occasionally freeze for several seconds.
- When switching between programs, the machine will often freeze for several seconds
- When using multiple tabs in either Firefox/IE, the computer does not respond for several seconds after telling one tab to load a website - the tab computer will not respond until after the tab has partially loaded the website
Looking at the task manager, I'm not sure why the computer is doing this. There are obviously plenty of resources available. For example, at present, I have only one program running (Firefox with 3 tabs open), as well as default background applications, but the computer is being sluggish.
I have disabled some of the unnecessary background applications and uninstalled the "bloatware" that came preloaded on the computer, and I have only installed Firefox, MagicDisc, Hamachi, and my network secure-access agent (required for my connection). Even if I disable/quit Hamachi, MagicDisc, and the network secure-access agent, the computer still has these issues.
In an attempt to speed things up, I popped in a fresh/clear 1gb SD card, and set it up as a 1gb ReadyBoost cache. This doesn't seem to have any effect on the issues that I listed above. I also have cleared all temp/cache files numerous times, but this doesn't seem to make any difference either.
Aside from graphics capabilities, my previous notebook, a 3-year-old HP DV6000 series (I forget which specific model) with a single-core CPU, 2gb of RAM, and Vista x86 Ultimate, is out performing the G50V-A2 when it comes to normal/routine usage (start up/shutdown from power-off/hibernation/sleep, application loading, application switching, etc.). Something is definitely wrong here...
Taskbar/Task Manager screenshots are attached.

ye that is not a fresh load on the g50. you got about 20 or more PROCESSES then default. Start by doing a clean install. on post press f9 repeatedly. this will allow you to use the hidden partition to restore to factory state. After you do that all you have to do is NOT installl every single software you can get all at once. Something you installed is most likely causing your issues in part or in whole

just out of curiousity, before you do a clean reinstall, dump Norton using the norton removal tool (google it)
No, I am not bashing Norton...I am sure others will do that. Norton works fine when it works, but when it goes bad (and eventually it does), it can create the problem you are describing. -

you can bash norton
the latest version works well though
i would definitely remove any remnants of norton that asus bundled with the image -
very strange that it would have so many running processes. i think i'm going to do the fresh recovery like suggested. otherwise, i'll just load vista x64 ultimate on this thing...if i do that, will i be able to download all the extra asus drivers/apps? -
I think you can use the drivers CD that you already have for Vista 64, but a reseller or someone who did it should confirm that.

I did a fresh reload on mine and used all the newer drivers on the asus driver page and now my system flies. The face recognition program sucks so I dont use it. For a virus scanner get NOD32 but for me I would say to stay away from any 3rd party spyware and firewall programs. Vista has them by default and they rock. Anyhow good luck.
