Well... I've had it back now for a little less than a week. The motherboard was replaced as were both the batteries.

I've put it thru 5 complete discharge / charge cycles... and NHC still says 0% wear for both. Battery life is back up to just over 4 hours. So far so good!

One note: this new board and/or bios is doing something strange to the cooling fan. When things heat up, the fan will literally spin up and down and up and down... maybe 5 cycles in 10 seconds? It seems to be when things are on their way to being hot. Once hot, it stays on full bore. When cool, I don't hear it at all.

That's good news! Let's hope it stays that way!

That sucks. I would guess that the hysteresis around the critical temperature when the fan changes the RPM is not properly designed (it is way too narrow) -- but it might also be something different.

If this happens a lot it might shorten the life of the fan. In that case, I would suggest stepping down one BIOS version until a new version appears that hopefully fixes this.

Or, you could rewrite the same BIOS version, and see if the behavior dissapears. That's unlikely however.

If you do step down the BIOS, check for signs of abnormal wear and update ASAP if they happen -- they may be related to the BIOS, in other words the new BIOS might prevent the wear from becoming a problem.
