i would very much have liked to be able to customize a few things =/ HD, CPU, memory.

ASUS wanted to save their best for their ensemble line... so that they would become more well known.
At least that's my best guess... but it makes sense. Instead of letting other companies branding it themselves... ASUS wants to make their presence in the notebook market stronger.
Good move on ASUS's part.

There will be a W3 barebones so don't get too antsy. You just won't get the luxury the ensemble line gets.

If a dealer customizes an ensemble unit, they are responsible for the warranty, so you couldn't send it to Asus at that point even if you wanted to.
This has both good and bad issuses that revolve around it. If you're local there are certainly more good points.

Sometime I wonder about Asus warranty. The warranty requires that you ship it back to where you purchase it and they ship it to Asus. You can't ship it directly to Asus right?
So what is the real differences between Asus warranty and the warranty carried by that store? heeh

Tay,
We will customize the W3 for you. And we will ship it out the day after you order it. You would lose the Asus warranty, but you would get our 2 year parts and labor warranty.

Basically.. the easiest way to put it..... if the ensemble line is customized, it's no longer an Asus system (in a way this is the best way to make people understand). Your dealer will be responsible for it, they will repair it, they will cover everything. The warranty basically would then be just like all of our custom systems warranty in which Asus has nothing to do with. If you travel abroad, it's plain and simple, you're not going to want to lose that warranty. If you're living in California, you might rather have warranty work done at Asus' California location rather than shipping it back to PA (to some place like Startech or ourselves) ...... so it's up to the customer to take into consideration what they are gaining and weigh that against what they are losing because it's either one way or the other. Can't have everything.
Thanks,
Justin

if you not a global traveller and only based in the USA, Asus warranty is not necessary and a reseller's warranty is good enough for you.

Smile,
No, actually we diagnose the problem, then order the parts we need from Asus and repair it here.

Yup, I'm definitely based in the US of A. I'll be waiting a bit then for a barebone w3v, or just go with the z71.

Well the barebone model, named the Z63a is certainly going to be a different machine. Right off the bat, since you're looking at the Z71v (I assume you're looking at the V and not the A), but the barebone W3 (Z63a) won't have dedicated graphics. That'll be the main thing that sets these two apart. But the warranty isn't important for international customers as much as it is for traveling with the notebook.
Thanks,
Justin

why, might i ask, would it not have dedicated graphics? wouldnt that seem a bit counterproductive, especially if they can already fit the x600?
-
PROPortable Company Representative
It's meant for another type of customer. Someone who wants a 14" widescreen, but doesn't need the extra graphics power, or weight that it adds, or extra power it consumes.
Lets face it, it's great to have the dedicated graphics in this system, but those graphics add about $200 to the system and most people looking for a small system aren't looking for dedicated graphics.
The Z63a model will also only have a regular lcd (not the color shine), no bluetooth... no aluminum.. it'll be all carbon fiber and painted white like the W5 (at least thats the last word I got). It'll have a combo drive standard, a dvd burner optional. All in all, it'll be able to be configured pretty cheaply if you want to go that low. Aside from the form factor... they are going to be very different notebooks.
Thanks,
Justin

Well, I mean technically if you wouldn't mind getting into a little cost on your end...... you take the Z63a chassis and put a W3v in it...... I don't know if that'd be ideal, but if you love white, you love white....... [

I was thinking, it might almost be nice to get a unit from another country if it carries that global warranty. Like, you could get the W5 with a DVD burner instead of just the combo drive.

for the cost difference of importing, you can pick up another drive seperately.... really.

Well, technically the drive in the V6 is the drive that is THE only other super slim drive you can put in that system. The W5's face plates would work and you'd be fine. You don't have to take the system apart, just take out a screw and pull the drive out. Obviously you're not going to have the warranty on the drive, but the rest of the system isn't being affected.
Something like that is something you can drop me a line about.
Thanks,
Justin

As of today, there is still not an ETA, which puts it at around a month still.

Why was the w3v made ensemble, not barebone?
