A few days ago, I preordered the Asus W2V. The OS that comes with it is Windows Media Center 2005 version. I'm planning on switching it to Windows XP Pro. Will the warranty be voided if I switch the OS on the W2V? If it voids the warranty, then is Windows Media Center anything like XP Pro?

No it won't void your warranty. Change away. BTW, congrats on an amazingly, awesome computer.

Windows Media Center is exactly like XP. It is XP, but with and added feature set and a new name. Stay with the MCE.

Media Center Edition is not only just like XP..... but it's XP Pro w/ additional software built in. I really enjoyed using it and even though it won't void their warranty, you won't be able to use the tv and stuff as easy as it's supposed to be used.

I read somewhere that it does not have the same networking options like XP Pro. Is this true?

    I don't think so.

by the way....software changes never void the warranty.

Well, first off.. the import reason why to use XP Pro on a notebook is because all of the powersaving features that the notebooks can use are built into Pro and don't work in Home.......

What type of networking are you talking about? Home doesn't let you network jack, I don't think (have never used it, only worked on some pc that had it) ... but Media Center is built onto of Pro and MCE needs the networking capabilities to run through your house..... so the only thing I can think of that might not be needed in MCE would be something like remote desktop..... where you could VPN in or something..... but I have nothing that tells me even that would be different. I'm new to MCE, but Tablet edition was the same way and it was exactly XP Pro plus the features for the tablet..... so I'm guessing, but until I see more, I don't really know where to start to see if there is anything else different.

What sort of power savings can you do in XP Pro and not in XP home? My M5 came pre-installed with XP Home. Maybe that's one of the reason I'm not getting very good battery life, if I can't use all the power-saving features that are available. It's probably fairly expensive to upgrade, though, and probalby not worth it just for that.

Well you can comparison on Microsoft's site...... but standby, hibernation, among others.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/evaluation/compare.mspx

    Info on Hibernate and Standby:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/hibernate.mspx

When originally choosing between Home and Pro... if this was a home desktop that was all alone and not on a network.. home is fine and pro isn't going to do anything for you. However Pro does have other features that make it worth the difference..... Most people just think if they're not on a domain, they don't need it. That's not true.

IME, Home and Pro are about the same as networking is concerned.
Im using XP Home now on my computer and I have Pro on another comp and they are set up exactly the same. I even have a linux file server and print server running without any problems.

Well it wasn't really a choice - the laptop came with it. To get XP Pro, I'd have had to go for a whole different configuration, with lots of other extra things that I didn't need (plus a £200 greater price tag). But I did assume that since I was a home user, that was probably all I'd need anyway.

However looking at the list of features, I can't see anything on Pro that I'd need. I seem to be able to use both stand-by and hibernation on Home anyway, so if that's all the power-saving is, then I've got it. I've also got a programme that allows remote access if I want it, and most of the other stuff didn't seem that relevent - or maybe I'm missing something!

I was more concerned that there was some major difference that would make a big difference to my battery life.

XP Pro contains some network security options that XP media center and XP home do not have.

If you plan on connecting to the network at your job or university...chances are you'll need XP Pro. no way around it...other than that ..media center is all the same as XP Pro.
