Will my z70va support the Gateway XHD3000 monitor?

I have been looking for a while for a 30 inch monitor. Though I expected to end up with a Dell 3008 WFP, CNET review said the Gateway XHD3000 monitor is a better performer though not as many connectors and no height adjustment.

Right now the Gateway can be bought at J& R for $900 and the Dell is $2000. I have never seen the Dell at less than 1960 though someone claims they knew people who got it at $1600.

The Gateway design is not as sleek looking but at less than half price and a better performer -- I think I can live with ugly.

I just don't know if my ASUS z70va will support the monitor.

Any of you ASUS experts know?

Someone may ask clarification about this: The graphics processor of the Z70Va is ATI X700 with 128MB DDR2 (dedicated) memory...

I am not an expert on graphics but as far as I remember, Z70Va has only VGA out (neither HDMI nor DVI). My guess is that the VGA out will be far too weak to support a 30" monitor.

You are correct about ATI X700, I have not been able to figure out whether it has 128 MB of DDR2. I also don't know if it just has VGA out.

In the specs for the Gateway monitor it comes with a VGA Cable. Does that tell us anything?

The recommended resolution for the Gateway is 2560 x 1600 (whihc is also the max.) When I right-click on the icon for ATI the max resolution that comes up is 1680 x 1050.

So I guess that rules the ASUS out.

You won't be able to get anything over 2048 x 1536 to operate on anything VGA. That is the limit of VGA on most (if not all) video cards, and you'd be lucky to even get that.

If you want to use a 2560x1600, you will need a video card which not only supports DVI, but it has to be dual-linked DVI.

You can usually operate these monitors at a lower resolution than optimal, but it won't be as clear. Otherwise, if you don't need all the pixels and just want a big screen, an HDTV might work. Some HDTVs have VGA, some TVs only offer HDMI. It should be pointed out that some HDTVs limit their VGA port to stupid and ridiculously low resolutions like 1024x768 on a 50" WS LCD HDTV (*cough*Toshiba*cough*).

It should be pointed out that DVI and HDMI on HDTVs might get you a 1920x1080 or 1366x768, but some TVs might require HDCP and getting a DVI->HDMI cable might not be enough.

If you have 1000-2000$ to drop down on a monitor of that sort, I think you need to consider getting a better laptop first.
