Will the W7J be configurable *without* webcam?

Will this be an option? I really dont have any use for the webcam and don't want it, but am really impressed with the other specs of the laptop.

i really doubt it, if you dont want the web cam, then dont use it. its really that simple

 

I think it's an "ensemble" unit so everyone gets the same basic package. Some resellers offer to do upgrades on these but they cost extra. For this reason you probably won't save any money by asking the reseller to yank the webcam out. If you really don't want it, you could probably do something like drive a pencil through the lens (like the mythic cyclops), but it won't save you any money.

 

Oh well, I suppose I'll just drive a pencil through it then.

 

A little black tape may work better/look nicer but the pencil method is probably more fun.

i have the same feelings as elgordo on the webcam. anyone who owns a webcam is automatically put on my creepy watch list. if you're a business person who legitimately does video conferencing thats one thing... but we all know what the primary use of them is.

The webcam is integrated into the LCD bezel and is part of the W7's chassis; it's not installable or removable in any sense, shy of yanking the entire LCD off. As noted elsewhere, the only upgradeable components to Ensemble models, for those resellers that even offer the option, are internal parts.

 

Pantsless chatting is the stereotype, I believe.

 

I don't like it because:

a) I already have a webcam on my desktop
b) It makes the notebook look slightly "gimmicky"
c) I'm not so tied to video chatting that I absolutely need one on my notebook

 

heh, in the fall i'll be a senior in computer science with a tendancy to dress provocatively. i don't need that creepy kid who sits next to me asking for the link to my webcam. i provoke enough on my own, i do not need or want the help of an integrated webcam.

 

Exactly. I do a lot of on-site programming (hence the need for something high-end). I fear the other geeks will laugh at me.

you're right.... more like hmmmm.... self concious of what others think, when in fact, it really doesnt matter does it?

 

All you realy have to do is get a black permanent marker or spray paint and color over the camara. If anyone asks its a sensor for the lcd to adjust according to the light in the room. Just make sure you get a marker/paint that stays the same color at different angles.

 

I'm not a big fan of webcams on notebooks, but if it's small I can handle it. But holy %^*$ why the hell did they have to put that hunk of junk on there? It's an atrocious piece of plastic sticking out of an otherwise attractive notebook. W7j, I think I'll pass.

 

I guess no one has heard of skype and families that live in other parts of the world!
For me a web cam is a must, it enables me to speak with my family and see them, as I have just become an uncle, the webcam/skype its a great way to still have a small presence in their life.
On a side note respect doesnt come from what you own, its how you behave....thus behave like an idiot and no-one will truely respect you, even if you do have a truck load of cash. Own a w7 laptop with a webcam and people will think you have a laptop with a webcam....period.

lol- you guys are great. I don't think a dislike for the webcam affixed to the notebook amounts to being vain or self-concious. I just think its unneccessary and mars the otherwise sleek design!

i'm vain because i DONT want a webcam? wow. there's a very good chance i'm ordering it regardless, but i believe i am entitled to my opinion that it's a useless feature for me.

 

um i agree with dragonesse, the webcam isnt of the highest quality, and it really doesnt come into use that much, i wouldnt want to pay for extra features either.

 

I just wish it wasnt such a HUGE chunk of silver at the edge. Sony SZ has a webcam too, but its integrated into the LCD top and truly isn't visible, by comparison.

I wish it was removable, because it sorta kinda is....bulky.

To all the haters, look at the bright side... maybe you can use the webcam to secretely figure out what everyone really thinks about you

This thread is about as usefull as the webcam itself... but i'm not going to complain about it.
