Just curious would this SSD be compatible with the G51VX model.

Sorry for the nub question but for some reason im having a senior moment.

yes any 2.5" sata drive will work

Why would you get a 80GB one? Get one where its capacity is a multiple of 32; they tend to be much cheaper.
-
The X-25M G2 (2nd generation w/Trim support) only comes in 80 or 160 and tbh 80GB for the OS and the few apps I need is more than plenty for now with the 320GB acting as storage.
I haven't read anything but glowing reviews of the X-25M G1 or G2 and I want to make sure I get a solid (no pun) SSD.
Also the price of the 80GB is about the max I want to spend at this time.
Not to mention between the time the auto notify came and they are out of stock again was about an hour, they are hot. -

Why not just get one of these- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167005 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134885
And with the right firmware shouldn't any SSD be TRIM enabled when win7 comes out? -
I got the G2 for the same as price as the G1, and my understanding is that TRIM support for the G1 is still in question leaning towards doubtfull. I would rather have guarenteed support especially since it ended up the same price (well I didnt get free shipping)
-
aren't all sata 2.5" HDD the same? im sure it would fit.
-
Well it is on its way.
I have installed additional HDD on desktops but never have I tried to "duplicate" or move the OS from one to the other. Is this a harder task?
My intention is to have the OS run from the new SSD. Do I need to use a transfer kit like this to accomplish this: http://www.cmsproducts.com/products/data_transfer_solutions.htm or is there a different way.
Anyone have a good guide for this type of task? -
I put an SSD in my G51VX-A1 and it only runs in IDE compatiblity mode. If I use enhanced or RAID with an SSD, I get BSODs when resuming from S3 standby.
IDE mode limits the drive to 130MB/s (instead of the normal 230MB/s)
Major bummer. -
What make/model SSD are you using?
-
80GB Intel X25 G1. I tried a friend's GSkill Falcon 128GB - same result.

Isn't it just a case of putting the new SSD in and installing your OS from the disc? -
No clue, as I have never dealt with doing anything besides installing additional storage drives for more storage. So even if I installed it I would guess there would be additional steps necessary to make sure that the laptop picks the right drive to boot from.
I was really hoping for a step by step process
Anyone know a good tutorial that is more than just an install job but includes an OS / transfer.
-
Hmm have you tried calling ASUS tech to see what they say in response.
-
Well my 80GB Intel X25M G2 will be arriving today.
How do you tell what "mode" it is in (IDE, etc). -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
1. put SSD in external enclosure.
2. DL trial of Acronis TrueImage, which is fully functional 14 day trial.
3. install TI onto notebook, then connect the enclosure and clone full HDD over to SSD.
4. turn off notebook and install SSD into notebook.
5. Turn on notebook. All done, including full OS and application migration too
.
-
Thanks, and that will take care of everything (OS, etc) 100%.
I guess I will need to get a few cables and an enclosure then.
Im also wondering what the issue the previous poster had regarding the IDE setting for the SSD. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Most 2.5" enclosures include the necessary USB cable. You just need to get an SATA one from Newegg, etc. -

You can not install your OS in IDE mode then change over to AHCI / Enhanced. Its not a SSD issue its a system setting issue in how the drive is read.
Install your OS in AHCI and then it will work in that mode.
Dont get IDE compatibility mode confused with a IDE connection, your still using SATA and all its speeds, just the new enhanced/ahci mode offers a few extra features that pretty much nobody would use for a regular computer let alone a laptop. Its mostly server related stuff like hot plugging.
If anything is limiting the speed it is probably the southbridge or your drivers/controllers also SSD's main speed boost over a HDD is its ultra low seek times not the raw speeds, however no reason to not get your max speed if you can.
Not all SSD work in AHCI but some do, and it seems to work on some computers and not others so its hit/miss. -
My SSD works fine in my desktop PC - S3 resume in AHCI/Enhanced mode - no problems.
I just used Ghost to clone the shipped 320GB drive onto my SSD while it was plugged into the eSATA port. (I used a SATA -> eSATA cable that came with a motherboard and powered the SSD temporarily with a SATA power connector running from my desktop's case) The recovery partition only works in AHCI/Enhanced mode. I also tried doing a fresh install of Windows on the SSD but S3 resuming still caused a BSOD. Then I decided to set the BIOS to SATA compatiblity mode and reinstall Windows. S3 resuming works but the SSD runs much slower.
I'll be contacting Asus but it would be nice to know if other people have this issue too because no other G51 owners that I've come across have tried an SSD so I'm keen to hear how it goes for you, Warhammer. -
Installed Intel 160G X25M G2 works fine in enhance mode:

Hey Ken, have not seen you in a while.
So you should send me that 160GB Intel G2 SSD
.... So that I can test it in the W90VP... for an extended amount of time for proper testing results. About 3 or 4 years.
-
Long time no see Vicious, been busy at work and most of the time I am on the phone.
W90VP with 160GB G2 SSD RAID-0 would be a beast.
, wait for price drop and I'll see if I can get 4 for us.

Hm, interesting are G71 owners having similar problems?

RAIDed SSDs... what'll they think of next.

raided raids of ssds
Actually I would go with 1 large mech HDD and 1 fast SSD of medium size so that I can retain the storage needed for media files, SSD realy does not help you with those.
Raid may raise your throughput but SSD's speed is mostly about its crazy fast latency and seek speed not its raw speed.
In Raid 0 you have a good chance of making the latency and seek time slower due to the raid controller slowing it down and the gains in throughput may not offset it enough to really make it a gain (unless your working with large files like say video editing)
Plus you still have the risk of having one drive fail and destroying the data on both, just because it is a SSD doesnt mean it cant/wont break. -

As of right now I'm perfectly happy with my twin 7200 rpm drives. Of course, as the technology matures (and prices drop), I am definitely going to go fo SSDs.
-
GenTech, everything works fine with SSD in Enhanced or RAID mode **except S3 (sleep) resume** which causes bluescreen.
Did you test S3 resume? -
I raided a couple of SSD's in my G51! its sweet!
-
I'll test it tonight.
-
Tested both sleep/hibernate mode works fine no BSOD.
-
I'm starting to think that my G51 SATA controller has issues. I put the 2x320GB back in and now the machine resets every time that it's about to start booting and then only one HDD is visible on the next boot. If I reboot again, the two HDDs are detected on the BIOS screen but then it resets with only one HDD detected etc. etc.
If I RAID the two HDDs, it boots fine or if I use IDE compatible mode, again it's fine. It's only if there's more than one volume in Enhanced or RAID mode that it resets itself. Maybe having two SSDs in RAID avoids the S3 issue. :-\
Very frustrating. -
Looks like it's not just me. There are loads of people in the Asus forum having the exact same SATA issues.
It seems to be a common problem with all G51VX. One thing a lot of people that are having this problem seem to have in common is that they've used the eSATA port at some point.
This could get ugly.
-
Nevermind, problem is solved here -

Thankfully, the Intel drive DOES work after all. It's just the Indilinx-based SSDs that have issues with the G51 (and possibly other notebooks)
Will this SSD fit a G51VX
