I don't see why not... but to be honest I don't know.
HOWEVER: You will need the mounting bracket for the Z96 to secure the drive. It WILL work without the mounting bracket, but stands a chance of falling out of the laptop without the bracket. As far as I know, the only way to get the bracket is to buy a drive with the barebones from your reseller. -

As JPZ stated it will work but drive will not be secure.
The only way to get brackets and screws is to buy drive that goes with notebook. The bracket and screws can not be bought seperately and they do not come with notebook. I know firsthand because I had a nice slim DVD burner that I ended up replacing later for that reason. -

They actually do now. we got them with the last shipment however there are no gurantees. A few were missing them and a few were missing screws.

Aww man... I was thinking I could save a few bucks doing that
How is the drive that comes with the barebone? What brand is it? -
Interesting. That's good to know, Eddie. Odd though, that some didn't have it- wonder if it was a one-time mistake?

sounds to me like g2p got seperate brackets to sell, but some barebones models were missing brackets/screws, so they might not be available seperately.

I got mine the other day and I was wondering what the heck these extra pieces were for.
Aside from the NEC 6650A that some people seem to be getting, is there any other confirmed drive that works with this unit? I took apart the mounting rails on my TSST L532A I have on my Z63A only to find that the connector isn't the same size, though I think it might be different because it's hot-pluggable.Dang it, I just need to install Windows...

Just got my SLW-831S today. Confirmed compatible, although it's quite a bit noisier than your typical slim drive...

Will this drive fit in Z96J?
