Looking for a 12.1" (non-widescreen) notebook, and the Asus Z33a is at the top of my list. I can't find anyone in the Washington D.C. metro area that has one on hand so I can see it, but I ran across the Winbook X610 at Micro Center. It appears to be a Z33a or Z33ae. On the back it says Z3300. Can anyone confirm this? It looks like a good deal at $1299 with 1.6GHz Pentium-M, 512MB, 80 GB hard drive, CD/DVD RW, and XP Pro. Its good looking too, dark but without the Z33a silver trim.

Here are some better pics
Here is a so-so review from Mobility Guru
The thing that concerns me the most is how much they disliked the screen. Would they use a different screen then is in the Z33a?
Thanks - JP

It's kinda tough to see...
the specs look like it would be a regular Z33a (not Z33Ae), but the picture... doesn't look exactly like a Z33. It could be..who knows...
If the back says Z3300, it indeed probably is a Z33a.
Go for it =D -
Yes it is. They also have the Z71V as their w500.

Yes and no........ That model is sort of a mix, but it is made by Asus. Asus ODM's for Epson (yes Epson sells notebooks... in Japan)....... that is more the design of the Epson model on that chassis.
Basically... it's the M5 design (z33), but it has the touchpad and left and right click buttons of the S5...... most people would like the aluminum buttons of the Z33 better..... I know I put a white M5 palmest on my S5 for just that reason.
One other thing...... I believe that's very old... they're using a 400mhz 1.6ghz cpu (725) so I would believe this is the M5n more than it is the Z33a.... because the Z33a has 533mhz bus...
Also.. this has 256mb onboard and is only upgrabale to 768mb, where as the new Z33ae has 512mb on board and is upgradable to 1gb
....... hope you see the difference. -
How about the screen? Mobility Guru complained that they did not like the display. Would the Z33ae have a different (and better) display?

Looking at a m5n 12" now and looking at z33's everyday I can say with 100% certainty that this 12" is the brightest 12" matte i have seen thus far. No complaints what so ever. The reviewer prolly comparing it to a 15.4" he is used to. If you read the reviews on this forum you will find there is really not much to complain about other then the actual size which you should expect from an ultralite 12"

There is a difference between what is "good" in 12" - 14" - 15" - 17" ........ the Z33ae's screen hasn't changed any in the 2 years the M5 and S5 have been out. There have been more reviews on these two models over the last two years than probably any other Asus notebook and 99% of the reviewers thought it was one hell of a screen.
I'd say to compare - you need to compare the best 12" XGA regular ratio, matte type displays out there and the two best next to this would be the 12" powerbook and I forget the model number, but Sony has one as well..... the screen in the Z33ae is the same screen that's in the newest 12" powerbook..... the older powerbook had a much dimmer screen that people may have complained about, but the new one has been in Asus' M5 and S5 series for the last two years....... and apple has just finally switched to it. -
