Hi, I'm running Windows 10 Home on an ASUS Q551LN 2-in-1 laptop which originally came with Windows 8.1. I did a fresh install of Win 10 after upgrade.
When I shut down/restart/sleep the machine, it does not shut down - the Hark Disk activity light is still blinking and the normal power button press does not work. If I do nothing, it remains in this state for hours. I need to press the power button for 5 seconds to reset it. Only then I can start the laptop.
This happens around half the times. I never had this problem with 8.1 on this machine.
I have the latest Windows 10 updates, and disabling fast boot and hibernate did not solve the problem.
Thanks.

hehe. Hilarious.
What happens is that a service or other is preventing the computer from being shut down. Since it happens after the screen turns off, it's safe to assume that s1 (or 2 or 3) is started, but that an active process prevents interruption. Normally what happens then is that the computer is just woken up again, before it will complete whatever stopped, before it shuts down. So what can cause this is exclusively a monitor-level (or admin program) trying to run acpi-calls that either fail, or are redundant and therefore rejected, before they are resent, etc.
In other words, there's only one single option for what this is, and it's Asus power4GearAwesomesuper program that runs the wrong acpi stack.
The bad news is that you need this program for anything on the computer to actually work. So make sure you've installed the packages it depends on, the "atk" stuff.. all should be available on web or on the driver disk.
And the worse news is that I've been trying to convince the nimrods at Asus to stop using monitor-calls to acpi like this for two years. And they're not going to do that, because reasons, and I quote:
You know, I wonder if these guys would have been the guys put in the stocks in the middle-ages, or if they would have been the raving princelings drunkenly stabbing people at random down the street. But perhaps in the future, we could reclaim some of their dna for food or fuel or something, so they'd actually be useful for something.
Windows 10 Q551LN won't shut down properly
