Bought a G71gx at the end of summer and sent in stuff to get free windows 7. Asus has yet to send anything but an email saying they reciever my email.
And now this article says it may cost us money.
-
From what I know it starts shipping out at october 22. And the money part is the shipping and handling?
-
i sent mine in and still havent recieved a confirmation mail/they got my email. im worried that i wont get the free upgrade...
-
I had to pay $25 for my "free" Windows 7 upgrade. What a rip off.
-
Did you guys get your serial # already for Windows 7? Or did they say you had to wait til October 22nd?
-
Shipping and handling applies for Asus.
You can check the shipping and handling fees at their site:
http://event.asus.com/2009/windows7/ -
My G51VX-RX05 from Best Buy didn't ask for any shipping fee when I applied for the upgrade discs. It said the cost was $0.00.
-
Hey weenie, sorry to ask again, but when you registered, did it give you the serial # for Windows 7?
-
I purchased a U81A-RX05 BB version and the upgrade so far is free!!!!!!!
-
-
-
The retail price of windows 7 is completely irrelevant. When you advertise a product as coming with a /free/ upgrade, it had damn well better be FREE
-
Since the article linked does not mention Asus specifically and there are some questions, I just PM'd the Asus rep for clarification on what the cost will be if any for US customers who qualify for an upgrade.

Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
It just sounded to easy, I knew, think Ill wait till they start shipping with it. Less work/ Immed Game time.
-
I've called Asus about the lack of a confirmation email after sending the proof of purchase in.
The rep told me that if they didn't email you back, it means that your proof of purchase is good. There is no confirmation email, just a reply if they don't accept your proof of purchase. -
Did anyone actually check the site I posted?
It's Asus' Windows 7 Upgrade Program site:
http://event.asus.com/2009/windows7/
You can find out all the information regarding the shipping and handling fees there. US seems to be free. In Canada, we do pay additional S/H. -
yes exactly, you pay if ur not US resident...you arent paying for Win7, ur paying for shipping/handling fees.
-
The thing is... I can't find my receipt... am I still able to get the *free* Windows 7 upgrade?
-
-
-
The Asus rep replied that they will charge a shipping fee, so I have PM'd once again to ask how much that will be.

ASUS Customer Care Company Representative
Unfortunately it is not up to us to determine eligibility, Microsoft created the requirements not guidelines, but requirements. So it's either yes or no, gray areas do not exist.
The company that does the verification, will follow the program as instructed. Asus does not hold any control or power other than the notebook model must be the one approved within the upgrade program. The rest is up to the end user ( date of purchase, submission date, eligibility ). -
Shipping is Free to US and USD $26.21 to Canada.
-
yep...now ASUS rep, may i/we please know when our orders are gonna ship out. i have no email replies but Tevash said if we dont receive one, then we are fine. so does that mean on OCt22 our orders will ship out? also, my status for win7 still says pending for Proof of purchase...does that mean my win7 upgrade hasnt been verified?
-
-
I was just told that US customers would pay a fee that varies according to location, but it would be around $20. If that's the case, I'll skip the "free" Asus upgrade and spend $29.95 to get the Professional version through the academic program.
-
how would they charge us tho? if we've already submitted everything, and they also said that we don't get an email if its confirmed..it just ships out. how would they request payment? cash on delivery? lol very doubtful. I'm betting w/e rep you talked to was out of the loop
-
It's the rep here on the forums, and they mentioned a memo that went out to US customer service reps. I am puzzled too, as the registration site does not require any payment info, but apparently there are several companies involved and they may not be talking to each other (we all know how well Asus shares information).
I tell ya, I love my laptop, and everyone at Asus has been pleasant to deal with, but if they can't clear up their communication problems I won't buy another of their products. Every answer just make everything less clear.
I'm not sure if I am registered or not. I emailed my documents as instructed, and asked for delivery/read receipts. The email was delivered, but I've gotten no read receipt and the status page for my order says that they are waiting for documents. The whole "don't get an email if it's confirmed" is a problem...did I not get an email because everything's OK, or did I not get an email because they lost my documents? -
yea...because it is supposed to ship 2 weeks from now. I don't see how they can expect US citizens to pay now..when everyone else has had months to pay. they wouldn't force it on us at the last minute :S

I have been following this thread out of curiosity. I bought my laptop well before the upgrade was announced and promptly downgraded it to XP Pro. I have since tried Win 7 and bought a pre-sale copy of the Professional edition to get the virtual XP mode, but all that is beside my point.
My point is that I am very surprised with what I am hearing about no confirmation email. My only contact so far has been with sending in the information for my free additional year of warranty. I sent the documents and promptly got an email informing me that they received my documents and than my additional year of warranty is in place.
I am surprised they were so responsive with the free extended warranty offer but not with this upgrade offer. I feel all of your frustrations and really hope it works out OK (for both you and ASUS's sake). -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
OK, for everyone who wasn't around here the last time that Microsoft did the upgrade to Vista at launch a short history review...... and I would expect it to be handled similarly this time around.
Asus contracted out (as did most of the OEM manufacturers) the upgrade fulfillment procedure, processing, mailing etc.... Asus is probably just simply forwarding the registrations over to MIcrosoft's upgrade fulfillment subcontractor and isn't logging them or anything else. Back then, few people got confirmation emails regarding status or anything along the way.
The W7 upgrade disc will most certainly *NOT* be shipped for delivery on 10/22, nor is it likely that all upgrade orders will be shipped within days of that date either (although some might). Forum members here generally reported receiving their Vista discs from the subcontractor over the course of 4-6 weeks following the launch date - remember, people, this is a "perk" upgrade financed and offered, wholly and solely, by Microsoft to prevent the market for PC purchases from tanking in the run-up to new OS launch, not a retail purchase that is going to be fulfilled immediately upon request, and as such the manufacturers have little involvement in the process -- thus, blaming or otherwise holding Asus responsible for issues along the way is shortsighted.
Windows 7 not free???
